Al (allysonsmith) And the winners are:

Thomas Hardy The Mayor of Casterbridge

Joseph Heller Catch-22

Anthony Trollope The Way We Live Now

Evelyn Waugh Brideshead Revisited

Sherry will now make up a schedule that includes the Reading List and Classics Corner winners.

Thanks again to all who nominated and voted!

Michelle (shell51) Typical of Susan Rogers Cooper's E.J. Pugh mysteries, E.J. gets involved in investigating another murder despite the objections of her husband and her detective next door neighbor. The difference in this one is the parts told from her daughter Megan's viewpoint. The mystery within a mystery had a bit of a surprise solution which was a little bit of a cheat on the author's part in my opinion. No real clues were given that could lead the reader to the correct conclusion.

message 8: by Carol (new)

Carol I have not been able to get through Catch-22 without skimming. Maybe this time I can. I haven't read Brideshead, so I amlooking forward to it. The other two I have read and liked them a lot, but don't know if I can reread them just yet.

message 9: by ☯Emily (last edited Nov 30, 2012 07:26PM) (new)

☯Emily Ginder I read Brideshead Revisited years ago and loved it. I'll see what happens this time around. I started, but never finished The Mayor of Casterbridge. I wonder if I will do better this time.

message 10: by Ann D (new)

Ann D Fabulous! I want to read them all.

message 11: by Julie (new)

Julie (readerjules) I am curious to know which ones were the ones that were really close to winning.

♪ Kim N (crossreactivity) Those are all on my TBR list!

message 13: by Susan from MD (new)

Susan from MD Wow - three of the four I voted for! I'm really looking forward to reading these.

message 14: by Sue (new)

Sue The only one I've read is The Mayor of Casterbridge but that was so long ago (college) that I voted for it--I want to read it again. I watched Brideshead On Masterpiece Theater but have never read the book. I'd like to try the others too. Lots of reading coming up!

message 15: by John (new)

John I KNEW Trollope and Waugh were the ones in front! I saw the the Trollope one on TV with David Suchet, but am looking forward to reading the book. I read the Waugh years ago, and likewise about reading it for this time. Hardy I read a long time ago, and might re-read for this one. Solid choices all!

message 16: by Charles (new)

Charles This is very inconvenient. I have read all four of these books and look forward to re-reading them and talking about them with all of you, but couldn't just one dog have been included to provide a break?

The tavern is located in the middle of town. It is usually quiet as people tend to go there to enjoy a drink or two.

message 18: by Ruth (new)

Ruth I've made 3 unsuccessful assaults on Catch 22. And I've read the other 3. It's been half a century since the Mayor of Casterbridge, though. Might be up for that one.

Well happy to see I am not the only one to have an adversion to Catch-22. I will try again, but I think this time I will get it from the library.

message 20: by Al (new)

Al (allysonsmith) Actually, it was Waugh and Hardy that were the clear favorites. Heller came next and Trollope just snuck in under the wire. Steinbeck and Shute were very close.

message 21: by Carol (new)

Carol So close and yet so far. I guess I will read Steinbeck on my own. (Big Sigh) :-)

Barbara Oh my gosh, Hardy was the clear favorite? That is the third time I have nominated that book! It just shows that perseverence is rewarded. Carol, you should wait and nominate Steinbeck next time.

I would like to read all 4 of these, if possible. Great list.

Ann D I nominated Catch-22 and Brideshead Revisited, so I was really excited that both books made the cut. I had considered nominating a Trollope, so I was very happy to see that on the list as well. I also wanted to read some more Hardy - a true "classic" writer.

I loved Catch-22 years ago. Ruth and Carol, did you read it then or attempt to get through it years later? That kind of satire may not appeal to everyone, but it sure did to me.

Sherry Before I make up the schedule, would people please remind me what books they would like to have when? I know Barb always has issues with leading discussions at certain times of the year. And I know that some of the Reading List books are still in hardback. I'm not guaranteeing I'll be able to come up with a schedule that will be perfect for everyone, but I'll do my best.
