Wow, I'm impressed. Were the Wales books hard to find? I haven't really tapped into the Welsh or Scottish counties yet.
They have taken a bit of digging but that's the most fun.Literature Wales has some good info.
Matching a place name with the county is tricky- I've been making notes of landmarks to find on google maps.
Awesome. I agree, digging is the most fun! I need to get back to digging and work on those county lists!

For Gloucestershire, England (#13 on the list), I read The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes. I used it for its Bristol setting, but it could also be used for London. This is a literary novel about memory, aging, emotional survival, lost opportunities, regret, and the profound effect of one person's actions on another.

summary post 7
Northamptonshire - Voice of the Fire by Alan Moore. I explained about this in the thread about books from our locations (where I put both my hometown and present home). Let me try and find it and paste it:I'm from Northampton, in England, and what springs quickly to mind is Voice of the Fire by Alan Moore, seeing as it's very local in its focus, though universal in its themes.
It told me new details about the history of the town (though one little fact, central to one of the characters, I can actually credit myself for having told him when I worked on a history project in the town) and the last chapter even told me news about specific people I had met and hadn't seen or heard of since I'd left. Though his current, longstanding project, called Jersusalem, may top it in all those ways and maybe more, from what I've heard on and off over the years of him writing it.
Definitely worth a read, even if you're not at all into the comic/graphic novel/etc. stuff he is better known for (Swamp Thing, From Hell, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, etc., etc.), though that has some variety too.
Definitely a good book for a general view on England, and even the general roots of modern western society too. So a real 'place book', where the place is minutely focused on, but therefore touches on the depths that are common to all. This is a big part of Alan's approach, I think.
There you go. It's hard for me to think of anything better for that county, though based mainly in and around Northampton. John Clare is the local famous poet, but then there's a chapter on him here. The book has fictional chapters at different points, all through from Iron Age time until modern times, finishing with Alan describing his feelings about the town as he walks around, looks at architecture, tells stories about himself, his family and people he knows (with one, I suddenly realised I'd been told this very story by its protagonist, sitting on a sofa next to me at a party, who, it trasnpired from this book, had died since). A famous murder is there, and what surrounds it, a link to the Guy Fawkes 'gunpowder plot', the Crusades, the Roman presence, Thomas Beckett, etc., etc., though always from a personal point of view of the protagonist that is kind of 'ultra personal', going to places 'beyond and behind' the obviously personal and expanding/sharpening/deepening the human subject and motivation to that kind of extreme. For example, you get to read a first person account of being burned at the stake (don't think this is a traumatising read, it isn't). A real digging into the place and its history both in terms of going back very far and following threads from point to point until the present, but also in digging deep into the mysteries of human perception and reality and the ebbs and flows of motivations and the surrounding circumstances that those motivations develop themselves in response to, with Alan's typical strong leaning towards looking towards the internal and purer meaning away from those external diversionary patterns and pressures, with history and its paths growing out of this meeting of that human interior and its changing relationship with the exterior; a battle to be ever fought, with history its stumbling path so far.

Oxfordshire -- Lark Rise to Candleford, by Flora ThompsonThe book is wonderful and so was the series.
A few days ago, I was discussing the following topic with a friend who is entirely Mediterranean and yet loves English novels. What is it about stories set in England that makes them so appealing, especially to non-English people? Is it Victorian manners, the English countryside, the particular sort of romance or mystery portrayed, the humanity expressed, or simply because it's good literature? Would we prefer a good, English novel to a translated Italian one of similar quality and topic? Is it because it's in English? Is it due to our personalities? All of the above? I hope this makes sense and would love to hear from UK readers as much as everyone else. Hooray for English lit!

Has anyone read a book set in Tyrone yet? I'd be interested in hearing about it.If you are looking for a Tyrone book I can suggest my novel, Dancing with Statues. It's set in post-conflict Tyrone and I hope it helps show a fresh view of NI and inspires people to visit. Dancing with Statues

Here's another Northamptonshire one I forgot:
I used to go and see this guy's band, which he talks about in the book too, in the Black Lion (now the Wig & Pen) on St.Giles Street in Northampton. The back of my head features in a picture of them I've seen going around the internet. Not that I know him. I think we have some mutual friends probably somewhere.
