Oooh, since I feel horribly inadequate when it comes to Canadian literature (I've got Atwood, Carson, and Montgomery only), I might do something similar! Thanks for the ideas!

The Canada Reads theme for 2013 is Turf Wars. Here are the Top Ten nominated books by region. I always find great recommendations at Canada Reads

Oooooh, what a fabulous resource! I am going to add the site to our list! Thank you!
I just finished The Beautiful Mystery by Louise Penny, part of the Chief Inspector Gamache series. It is set in an isolated monastery in Quebec province where one of the monks is found murdered. The monks lived a simple life whose days were devoted to singing Gregorian chants. There is a darker subplot involving the inspectors and Gamache's boss. The book had more emotional depth than many mysteries, and kept my interest. I'm planning to read more in this series.
So far in 2013 across Canada I have been to Quebec with A Trick of the Light
and Alberta with
Extreme Frontiers: Racing Across Canada from Newfoundland to the Rockies
Hey, I just read a Louise Penny too: Still Life
I'm kind of OCD about series, so I had to start with the first. I also read all the books in the Inger Ash Wolfe series, set in rural Ontario, beginning with The Calling
, which I heartily recommend.British Columbia: Wayson Choy, Paper Shadows
Saskatchewan: Rudy Wiebe, Of This Earth
Newfoundland and Labrador
River Thieves by Michael Crummey
But for this challenge, I might never have read this remarkable book. The author combined real historical events and people with fictional ones in telling a story of early 1800's northeastern Newfoundland, fishermen and trappers, and Beothuk natives. I'm still shivering!

I just put River Thieves on my "to read" list. It sounds great. I am planning a trip to the Canadian Maritimes this summer and want to read about the region. Thanks for posting the book.

What a wonderful trip, Laurie. I visited the Maritimes (except for Newfoundland unfortunately!) a few years ago, and am still relishing the memories.

My fourth grader has decided to do this. He has to read a lot of books for school and for his after school book club, so the compromise is that he will be reading picture books instead of chapter books. After reading books from Canada, he will be reading around the world. He is too young to be on Goodreads, so I will post for him. Here is his list:Alberta: As Long as the Rivers Flow
British Columbia: Garden of the Spirit Bear: Life in the Great Northern Rainforest
Manitoba: Winter Rescue
Northwest Territories: Scruffy: A Wolf Finds His Place in the Pack
Nova Scotia: Silent Observer
Nunavut: The Gift of the Inuksuk
Prince Edward Island: Chester's Barn
Quebec: The Flying Canoe
Saskatchewan: Pioneer Girl
That's terrific, Diane! There's an adult version of the caribou book that I'm hoping to read this year too.
I am in on this too!My proposed list:

British Columbia:The Concubine's Children

Quebec:Kamouraska
Saskatchewan:Canada
Yukon:The Call of the Wild
Connie wrote: "That's terrific, Diane! There's an adult version of the caribou book that I'm hoping to read this year too."We enjoyed the kid version so much that we are now reading the grown-up version to find out more about their journey with the caribou.
