Here's the review that got my attention: "Laymon's debut novel is an ambitious mix of contemporary southern gothic with Murakamiesque magical realism." ---BooklistThe author is from Mississippi, and the setting of the book is there as well. Since I'm a fan of Haruki Murakami, I'm tempted to get this one!

My Notorious Life by Kate Manning is a Kindle Daily Deal today. Not southern, but a great yarn dealing with women's reproductive rights, the Orphan Train and early immigration in NYC. Well worth it. A favorite read of mine in 2013!
