I have already read it, but I don’t own a copy. When I think about the books I have read it keeps coming back as being one of, if not the best book I’ve ever read. So Santa, in the hopes of me being on the nice list and adding greatness to my bookshelf can you bring me a copy of Les Misérables.

message 3: by Kat (new)

Kat Gale (superkatness) | 118 comments I'd hyperventilate if I found The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the World's Ancient Languages under the Christmas tree. It's super expensive, which is why I don't have a copy.

Meg | 10 comments I would really like a nice set (cheating slightly) of the Shaara Civil war trilogy. I have a beat up from college copy of The Killer Angels, but not the others.

Killer Angels is truly a great read, so vivid. I also need to read the other two books.

message 6: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 43 comments Kat: I didn't even know there was a book like that. I'd like to see it, too.

There are several interesting-sounding books out now about Charles Dickens and his life and loves that I can't get through Interlibrary Loan. I'd like those.

Zoe (bookfanatic66) | 126 comments Lake Como by Srdjan Valjarevic

Unfortunately it is out of print and I can't find it anywhere.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Zoe,

Try bookfinder.com to find your out of print book.

I found an out of print book that was selling in US (my country) for $200 and up on Amazon and as much as $3500 on eBay. I Finally was able to buy it via book.com for around $70 USD on a European Amazon site.

message 10: by Aprilleigh (new)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 333 comments I would like a complete hardcover set of Lyn Hamilton's archaeological mystery series featuring Lara McClintoch. Unfortunately, the first two volumes were never published in hardcover because she was an unknown and considered worthy of only mass-market paperback. Pity they didn't re-release those after her work became more popular. If I want a matching set of all 11 titles I either need to find mass-market paperbacks or pick up the ebooks.

I love historical fiction more than any other genre so A Tabernacle for the Sun and its sequels.

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) | 799 comments I'd love to get Precious Nonsense: The Gettysburg Address, Ben Jonson's Epitaphs on His Children, and Twelfth Night, because in that book it's stated that art is not subjective, and the author makes a strong case. It's out of print.

message 21: by Jehona (new)

Jehona | 129 comments Santa always brings me books. As does every holiday. My boyfriend isn't very good at choosing other kinds of gifts. So Christmas or Eid or Birthday or Valentine's Day... It's a book. The problem I'm trying to solve right now is how to get him to check my Goodreads to-read list. If you have any ideas, feel free to share. Last Christmas he bought me a book I already owned. So, I guess, any book I haven't read and want to and don't own.

BAM doesn’t answer to her real name So what I did was start a couple of boards on Pinterest
One: already read that
Two: what to read
Then my daughter who isn’t on GR has some book purchase direction

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 333 comments I'd create a wishlist on Amazon and send him the link, but I'm subtle like that. ;)

message 24: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Either a collection of all of Shakespeare's plays with parallel text in English and Italian (there are some editions which are great but around 45-50 € each, which is too expensive for me), OR Notebooks by Emil M. Cioran (which is very expensive both in French and Italian - as I wouldn't obviously want the English edition) OR Francesca Woodman by Chris Townsend. You get to choose, Santa.

message 27: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Hughes | 5 comments A difficult question. From a reading point of view I would love to have a good leather bound set of Dickens, however my wife collects first edition Christie so a good one of those. Alternatively I could ask for an original Bird of America by Audubon, sell it and then buy both the above.

I would like a nice hardback, cloth, leather, etc. version of Jane Eyre with a font that is easy on my old eyes. I want to reread it, but not the old mass market paperback I have. I also have it on kindle, but I would prefer a lovely hardback.

message 29: by Luke (last edited Dec 22, 2018 12:00PM) (new)

Christopher, have you seen a super-sized copy of Audubon? If you and your wife if get to visit Corpus Christi, you might want to stop by the main library. There you will find a super-sized edition, a couple of feet tall, maybe. It can be found in a glass case, sometimes in the lobby as you walk in and sometimes in the big window on themfirsr floor. That window overlooks the open air aviary in Blucher Park.

Brina How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent by Julia Alvarez

I reread it every few years but always get from the library. I *should* own it but don’t. Chanukah is over so I will wait until the next opportunity I have to ask for a gift.

I believe the page size is called Double Elephant. He wanted to draw the bird all life sized. Thus pages for small birds tend to have many painted where as the larger birds appear cramped and twisted on the pages. It is a shame that in order to draw them so well he first had to shoot them!

I received a lovely leather bound copy by Penguin Leather Classics for Christmas. I think it is available on Amazon for a very reasonable price. Books like this are always better in the hard back since we tend to read them often.

message 38: by LiLi (new)

Have you read the book on Audubon by Richard Rhodes? I thought it was fascinating.

I haven't read this but I will look for it. My knowledge of Audubon comes from the family home in Scotland that had framed pictures on the wall of the Dining room (I don't think they were original).

message 40: by Felicia (new)

Felicia I'd love to get "The Beautiful and Damned" by F. Scott Fitzgerald in the Penguin Hardback Classics 70th Anniversary edition, I LOVE the gold and white cover, and would love to add another book to my collection of these beautiful editions of Fitzgeralds books!

Wow how nice Christopher! I will look for it.. Update, although there was a beautiful cloth-covered edition, I did go with a larger print, but still paperback copy. Sigh.
