CHALLENGE COMPLETE
Audio Book Challenge: Delightful Diction or Nightmare Narration?Duration: February 15 – November 14, 2012
Modulator: 20 books might increase later
COPY FROM HERE: CHALLENGE COMPLETE post 243, 20/20 done
READ: 20/20
Delightful Diction: 13
Nightmare Narration: 7
NOTE: my ratings are for the narration not the book itself!
1.
Narrator: Nancy Wu ★★★★★As far as I know, this is the first book I've listened to narrated by Nancy Wu and she was fantastic! There were many many characters and Nancy had distinctive voices for each and every one of them. There were no strange timing issues and her inflection and tone of voice were perfect. She read faster or slower depending on the tension level between the characters and the danger. She also had wonderful pronunciation on the difficult Chinese names. Definitely a narrator I would listen to again. Hopefully she'll do the sequel. Delightful Diction! Finished on 2-25-12 my review
2.
Narrator: Kelly Lintz ★★I had one main issue with this narrator - she voiced the heroine (who is a 459 year old immortal stuck in a 20 year olds body) as an annoying teenager with attitude. I'm not sure that this is what the author intended and it was rather irritating. This was in no way a young adult book and voicing the characters as such was just wrong.Nightmare Narration! Finished 3-2-12 my review
3.
Narrator: Steven Webber ★★★★The only real timing issue was when there are several breaks in a chapter (not sure what they are called), the narrator didn't break enough and just rambled into the next "section" without pause. It was rather confusing and took a moment to adjust to. His characters were easy to tell apart and he did both the male and female characters (children at that) wonderfully. His breathing was ok and there weren't any weird saliva sounds either. Delightful Diction! Finished 3-12-12 my review
4.
Narrator: Kate Burton ★★I'm only a few chapters into this and I already know that this is going to be a nightmare narration! There is no difference between female characters. The heroine has had meetings with three different women so far and I couldn't even tell who was talking. The narrator does ok with the different men's voices but not the females. Nightmare Narration! Finished 3-21-12 my review
5.
Narrator: Angela Dawe ★★★★★This was a very short book but the narrator was wonderful. Angela performance of the few female voices was distinctive and gender appropriate. She had perfect timing, her pronunciations were excellent. Delightful Diction! Finished 3-22-12 my review
6.
Narrator: Gerard Doyle ★★★★★Gerard Doyle was magnificient! There are over 50 characters and he had gender distinctive voices for each and every one. My only issue was that he gave one of the bad guys a delightful Scottish brogue which caused me to fall in love with this bad guy. (Obviously Scots is my weakness.) His pronunciation of the bizarre names, cities and even made-up ancient languages was spot on and not a single mistake in 849 pages! It's too bad this series has ended because I would love to hear more delightful diction from Gerard Doyle. Delightful Diction! Finished 4-10-12 my review

Narrator: James Marsters ★★I loved this book but the narrator was terrible. He spent most of the book sloshing spit around in his mouth and swallowing really loudly. It was disgusting and distracting. Though he did have distinctive voices for all characters and he especially made the bad guys sound great. Nightmare Narration! Finished 4-18-12 my review
8.
Narrator: Allan Corduner ★★★★Allan does a great job with the many characters both male and female with a definite distinction between the sexes. My only issue is with things link "aha", he doesn't give this enough emphasis and it tends to blend in with the sentence instead of standing out. Delightful Diction! Finished 4-23-12 my review
9.
Narrator: Susan Ericksen ★★★★★I really wish that Susan Ericksen had narrated all the books I've read with Irish charaters (especially those by Nora Roberts). She makes Roarke sound even more wonderful than he is. His accent just sends chills down my spine. Yummy! I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Susan Ericksen! She has perfect timing, perfect cadence, distinctive voices for all characters (and there are quite a few of them in this one) and her inflection at suspenseful moments is...you guessed it...perfect. Delightful Diction! Finished 5-4-12 my review
10.
Narrator: Susan O'Malley ★★★★Susan did a really good job with the many voices required in this book but she did slip occasionally and use the wrong voice for the main character. It was really noticeable and had me thinking is that Amelia? Other than that, her pronunciation was great with all the crazy Egyptian names and towns. Delightful Diction! Finished 5-12-12 my review
11.
Narrator: Kirsten Potter ★★★★★Kirsten did an excellent job of reading this rather dark mystery featuring a group of young children. She had very distinctive voices for each and every character. Male and female were easily distinguishable and there were even ethnic characters that were portrayed splendidly. There were no strange timing issues, mis-pronunciations or heavy (panting) breath sounds. There really wasn't any difficult words/names/towns etc but Kirsten did a marvelous job on this book. Delightful Diction! Finished 5-22-12 my review
12.
Narrator: Michael Prichard ★★★★★I really liked Michael Prichard's voice. This book took place in a north African country (Mali) with very difficult names and accents to portray. He did a splendid job. All characters where distinctive and both male and female were easily determined. Michael's timing was great and he raised or lowered his voice and spoke faster or slower to build suspense. Just wonderful. Delightful Diction! Finished 6-5-12 my review
13.
Narrator: Michael Brandman ★★★★★I really didn't like this story as the main character was abrupt and rude. I did like the narrator! He had the perfect voice for the main character. Heck he had the perfect voice for all the characters - male and female. He used great voices for all and they were easily recognizable. His pacing was on point and his inflection was perfect. Definitely a narrator I would listen to again. Delightful Diction! Finished 7-5-12 my review
14.
Narrator: Michael York ★★★★★WOW this was a fantastic production by Michael York! He had enough varied voices to make all the characters - human and animals alike. He was even able to differentiate between male, female, adult and child. Just wonderful. There was never any question as to who was speaking. I particularly liked his voice for Aslan. A truly spectacular performance. I'm hoping that the others in the Chronicles of Narnia series are available on audio as I'd like to enjoy the entire thing with one narrator. Delightful Diction! Finished 7-9-12 my review
15.
Narrator: Roy Dotrice ★★★I seem to recall that Roy Dotrice got some kind of award for performing this audiobook since it had so many characters but I was not impressed. Sure he did various voices but he was only able to maintain a certain voice for a chapter but once the next chapter started, those new characters sounded just like the previous ones. It was very confusing and distracting. The only voice he actually maintained was the eunuch because he gave him a terrible lisp. Roy also managed to mispronounce certain characters names. For example: sometimes he said Jeffrey instead of Joffrey (in the same chapter) which had me tilting my head going huh? Nightmare Narration! Finished 7-19-12 my review
16.
Narrator: Billy Baldwin ★★For some reason, they made this into a production with five different people portraying the characters. I guess this was because each chapter is told from a different perspective which should have made for a great reading. But when we had Kate's POV, she was listening to Tom's opening statement, yet Kate spoke Tom's parts instead of Tom so it was really confusing. This happened throughout the entire book so it made for a disjointed tale. I'll have to be more aware when I pick up an audiobook to be sure not to duplicate this experience. Billy Baldwin was the main narrator so I'm using him for this review. His parts were well-done but as a whole, the production was a mistake. Nightmare Narration! Finished 7-27-12 my review
17.
Narrator: Barbara Rosenblat ★★★★★Barbara Rosenblat is a wonderful narrator. I've listened to her many times and enjoyed her production immensely. She is able to portray all accents realistically and for a prolonged time. (In this case it was German.) And her pronunciation is amazing. She just spits those complicated sounding words out without a problem. Me I have trouble listening to those names never mind trying to pronounce them. Delightful Diction! Finished 7-31-12 my review
18.
Narrator: Kimberly Alexis ★★★★★Anyone who can read an erotic novel without cracking up, is an amazing actress (actor). Kimberly Alexis did a spectacular job with the different voices for each character (and there are quite a few) and her pronunciation and pacing were terrific. I don't usually listen to erotica since it is usually rather uncomfortable but I truly enjoyed her rendition of this book. Delightful Diction! Finished 8-8-12 my review
19.
Narrator: Linda Greenlaw ★First of all, I must say that I truly enjoyed this book (5 stars!). Secondly, this author should never have read her own book. She's not a trained anything and it showed. She raced through the entire reading, stumbling over words, and just reading so fast it was difficult to understand her. Lucky for me, I've always loved fishing so I knew what she was talking about but the specifics of commercial swordfishing was new to me and was difficult to catch with her breakneck pace. Nightmare Narration! Finished 8-13-12 my review
20.
Narrator: Judy Kaye ★★★★★Judy Kaye did a wonderful job reading this book with so many points of view and a variety of characters from all walks of life. It was easy to tell one from the other even without the descriptive (said Johnny, mumbled Mary, etc). Ms. Kaye's pacing was great and her inflection was appropriate both when the story was mundane and when the excitement grew. Delightful Diction! Finished 8-22-12 my review
