James Wilkinson | 205 comments Just wondering how people feel with regards to the English language. Are there correct ways in which to use it, are there incorrect ways? Are you irritated by inconsistent spelling and grammar? Is it horrific when people use double negatives such as 'I don't know nothing about anything'? Should we follow the strict grammar evoked by certain literary figures like Samuel Johnson? Are snipes about someone's bad spelling or inconsistent grammar merely devices by which individuals impose social judgements on other people? Is there a 'proper' way in which to speak and write English, or is it all ridiculous, and we shouldn't try and impose a system of correctness on an entity that is by nature evolutionary. Thoughts please.

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments Oh God, I hate the use of double negatives.

I think people don't need to do everything with perfect grammar and spelling, hell my spelling sucks, but they need to try. No taking out vowels e.g. txt, thx, ppl, hppy, etc...

AND USE PUNCTUATION!!!!! It's almost impossible to read a debate when you don't understand when a sentence starts/ends.

message 3: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments It also makes you seem like an idiot.

message 4: by Sheeky (new)

Sheeky (sheekster) True.....but I like takin out vowels likeonly when I'm lazy...at skool I have to spell correctly....

message 5: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments Well so do I...

message 6: by Sheeky (new)

Sheeky (sheekster) Yeah but when I txt or type I go on like full not-spelling-or-talking-correctly mode. (I dont think that made ANY sense lol)

message 7: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments Well, you're doing fine here.

message 8: by Sheeky (new)

Sheeky (sheekster) I noticed.

message 9: by Liz (new)

Liz It drives me insane how some people have to abbreviate things and use improper grammar and punctuation. I can't read any posts like that and it seems like they aren't being serious and that really bothers me. Oh, not to mention the long strands of:
lol
omg
tas funny

message 10: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments Omg and lol are the only thing I can tolerate. Everything else must go.

message 11: by Sheeky (new)

Sheeky (sheekster) I use lol and omg alot.....

message 12: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments A space lot.

message 13: by James (new)

James Wilkinson | 205 comments The store in which I work has a lift. The lift ended up breaking down, so we had to close it off. One of my colleagues put a sign up on the lift door saying 'OUT OV ORDER'. Good for a laugh I suppose.

message 14: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments Hahahahaha, *wipes tear from eye* ah......

message 15: by James (new)

James Wilkinson | 205 comments No. In retrospect, still irritating.

message 16: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments If you choose to look at it, then maybe. But it's a sign; you don't need to look at it for to long to get the message

message 17: by Sheeky (new)

Sheeky (sheekster) True.

message 18: by Emma the Dork (new)

Emma the Dork (cheesehead) ok, let me say this:

the english language is a stupid, stupid language and yet
i love it with my heart an soul and am SO going to be an english major and my friends hate me for always correcting their spelling.
it's just stupid because of all the different sounds that vowels make, but i love that and remember words well (thus the two spelling bee victories against people a lot older than me) so yeah.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

well i am here...the reason (probably) for most of the people (masha and emma) that are posting here...but i don't think it is fair for people to complain for kids coming home from school and having to hear the complaints of others because they don't wanna have to take up time or have all of the pressure if we have to use it all day long...

message 20: by Emma the Dork (new)

Emma the Dork (cheesehead) uhhh that was a different topic, sara....no one is talking about that in this one.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

i know but you all (pretty much) fuss at me for "not using proper grammar"

message 22: by Emma the Dork (new)

Emma the Dork (cheesehead) lol including me.....i definitely use it except for lol and omg and the occasional idk or btw and i don't use capitals very much.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I ONLY DO THAT WHEN I AM EMPHASIZING OR AS YALL CALL IT YELLING...OR FORGET TO TURN OFF THE CAPS...

as i did in this post...*thinks in head* man i really need to stop doing that

message 24: by Sheeky (new)

Sheeky (sheekster) lol

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

yes that is me

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

making people lol

message 27: by Sheeky (new)

Sheeky (sheekster) lol

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

there i go again

message 29: by Emma the Dork (new)

Emma the Dork (cheesehead) yeah i don't get why some people find all caps offensive...its weird...

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

they just ASSUME that we are yelling but as my mom says "assuming makes an ASS out of U and ME"

PUT ALL OF THE CAPS LETTERS TOGETHER AND YOU GET THE WORD

please again excuse the caps

message 31: by Sheeky (new)

Sheeky (sheekster) ASSUME!

message 32: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments Jeex Louise, so what if you go to school all day? So do most of us. And if you are going to be immature about it then go to a kiddie group, not a mature one like this. We don't need a weak link spoiling our debates.

message 33: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments And Sara, it really isn't emphasizing when you capitalize the whole thing.

message 34: by Brigid ✩ (new)

Brigid ✩ It depends on where you're writing. I mean, if it's on, like, facebook or something, or in some less formal group, then it doesn't matter. But for this group, I would say: At least use punctuation. Not using capitals, I'm okay with. But it's a debate group: the point is to get your point across. If you write a jumbled mass of crap, then you don't make much of a strong argument. Also, writing everything in all-caps is just plain obnoxious, and, at least personally, makes me think your argument is invalid. I respect the comments that are expressed calmly and logically. I know it's hard; I lose control sometimes, too. But it's better when people don't go on crazy rants, cuz then it's just like, O_o "okay ... take a chill pill."

message 35: by Sheeky (new)

Sheeky (sheekster) True true

message 36: by Sarah jean (new)

wha ?

message 40: by Sarah jean (new)

Sarah jean blank (Sarahjean) not u. sum1 else

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Sara, your argument of having to "go to school all day and being forced to spell things correctly and use proper grammar" is pathetic.

We all go to school all day, in one way or another.
And if we don't, we have before.

I almost like it. X) It's interesting.

message 43: by Lorna (new)

Lorna | 1273 comments They say english is really hard to learn for that reason. SO. That must mean we're all REALLY clever, because we learnt it!

XD

message 44: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) | 7365 comments Mod
It's hard, but if you're a native it's not that bad. X)

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 222 comments It's more that we're lucky. It's easy to learn a language when your really young. That's why parents sometimes speak to their kid in two languages.

message 46: by Lorna (new)

Lorna | 1273 comments My little four year old cousin is fuent in English and Swedish...lucky thing!

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 222 comments English is my least favorite language by sound. I love the way that pretty much every foreign language sounds, but I'm neutral about English. English just sounds boring.

It is a really fun language to read and write, though. The more difficult languages are always the best. Although, I find it really funny when people are proud of how hard it is for non-native speakers to their language. It seems almost sadistic. XD

I'm going to start on Swedish once I finish my Elisabeth translation. It's a cool language. It's very pretty.

message 48: by Lorna (new)

Lorna | 1273 comments ...swedish chef...hehehe!

I love french (of course), german sounds nice and angry, and celtic is beautiful.

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 222 comments What about a Swedish chef?

French is not really one of my favorites. I don't like the sound of the nasal vowels. I like it a bit, but I like others better.

I've never really thought that German sounded angry. I love the sound of it.

My favorite language at the moment is Hungarian. It sounds so cool!

message 50: by Lorna (new)

Lorna | 1273 comments Even though I have swedish relatives, and know SOME words, all I think of when swedish it mentioned is the Swedish Chef...'noodlenoodlenoodle'...that guy cracks me up!

I haven't heard hungarian.
