I love science...even though it wasn't always my best subject in college. I especially love reading about space. This is a wonderful lecture by British physicist (and former pop music singer) Brian Cox on the creation of the universe.

An asteroid is going to come between earth and the moon in February. Nothing scary though...http://www.cnn.com/video/?hpt=hp_t2#/...
Did anyone here ever read Carl Honore's "In Praise of Slowness"? Honore explores how to slow down, not only to help the environment, but to help us individually: everything from the Slow Food Movement to education to family life. Here is a nice overview from his 20 minutes lecture for a TED Talk:

Some day, I would love to have the group read his book. Very relevant to every day living.
I posted the word to Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot on the Green Quotes thread, but here is a good video that someone created based on the words:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pfwY2...
Very cool - A wonderful celebration of earth in music. This is a video of composer Eric Whitacre at a TED conference. He wrote a choir piece called Cloudburst with words by poet Octavio Paz after being caught in a cloudburst. He combines the performance with live singers and virtual singers using Skype.

I've had this song in my head for the last week - Counting Crows "Big Yellow Taxi". Video with song and someone's interpretation of the lyrics:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNltj...
Great remake of the Monty Python song - The Universe Expanding - for a Brian Cox show in Britain:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3JQX...
Good video from moveon.org - Is There Anything More Beautiful Than This? And great tribute to those who lost their lives battling for the environment.http://front.moveon.org/is-there-anyt...
Some very short clips are embedded in journalism now. For instance, did you see that the Rift Valley developed a rift recently? This is due to continental drift.

Here's one from Nat Geo on developing trees to reforest Iceland in a time of climate change.

Breathtaking scenery as well. Nat Geo does such a great job in so many areas that support environmental causes!

Nat Geo again - this one is a ranch on Texas limestone that was wasteland because there was no water. A gentleman who had worked hard for his money bought the worst land he could buy and, very simply, restored it to beauty and a haven for nature.
Bamberger Ranch.

Some great scenes and we learn about genetics and propagation.

Curlews need a lot of help if they are not going to disappear in this generation of birds. Ireland is now down to about 120 breeding pairs.

Thanks Jimmy! I have been supporting the Irish Peatlands Conservation Council for many years. This didn't cost me anything because they take used postage stamps and sell them.
Film on YT from 2018 about marine and other plastic and Coca Cola.

I've had a recommendation for this one. Morocco, which is on the west cast of North Africa, could in theory generate enough power for 7 million homes through wind, solar and wave energy. The film suggests this could be piped to Europe, specifically we are shown the south tip of UK is in a line above the further west point.
Of course, those folks in Africa's wider community might think the power should be distributed around Africa.
14 mins but you can skip ahead to visuals if you don't have much time.

The Irish efforts to support broadcasting about climate change have stepped up a little.
https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2022/...
"Significant new funding for climate change broadcasting projects for TV and radio has been announced by Ministers Eamon Ryan and Catherine Martin.
It follows a commitment in the Climate Action Plan published last year to support the development of media content that raises awareness of climate change and promote action and behavioural change to combat it.
A total of €5 million is being provided specifically for climate broadcasting with half of the money coming from the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Environment, and half from the Department Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media.
Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan said that he does not think this will be a once-off round of funding for climate coverage, but that the Government needs to see how it works, test it, and try it out to make sure that it is the right model to support climate broadcasting."

The UNEP has got it right - about 2.5 minutes and appealing to younger people while providing role models.

I was the first Like.
Plastik. A little girl sees the world differently through a plastic bottle.
2 .5 minutes. Have a look, show others.

Two earlier films by UNEP, I had already linked to them under the plastics thread.
Films now need to be short and pointed, because most people are not going to watch something for 30 minutes - especially if they fear they will be lectured or made to feel bad. Shorter is also easier to present to kids, who have short attention spans.
By showing how someone's own life can be affected, and the benefits of making a change, this anti-single use plastics message is made easy to understand and easy to pass on to a friend.

This TED talk gives me hope. Smart, passionate young people like this may yet force the entrenched special interests to yield and spur government leaders to act; this emerging generation of climate activists inspires me!

I found a nice YT video on how China is fighting desertification, regreening areas and protecting roads and rail from sand.
They are doing this by re-using the straw from grain harvests and digging it into squares on the dunes, then dropping suitable seeds inside each cell.
Growth of plants has many benefits including for birds and other wildlife, but that isn't given attention as the focus is on living conditions and communication links.

Jack Hargreaves made a series of short films during the 1970s about traditional British country life. I am linking to one about rod fishing, but other stories include netting rabbits, how the blacksmith or timber cutter worked, the thatcher and details of their job. Hargreaves was born before what he refers to as 'the Kaiser's War' and would have gone out as a young lad to help feed the family with rabbits, fish and wild fruits.
