fiction files redux discussion

Ok, so I am reading a Movable Feast and just finished the chapter on how his friendship ended with Gertrude Stein and I am complexity not getting it. I don't understand what happen. It's like I am missing the back story or historical context... Anybody have any insights? Also his last sentence in the chapter makes zero sense to me... What did I miss?
