Book is mostly set in Denmark, but the latter part was set in Greenland. There were also many references to Greenland throughout the book. It was a very engaging and well-written book. However, I think the end could have been better and it could have been a bit shorter.

Diane | 13052 comments 3. Svalbard and Jan Mayen: The Solitude of Thomas Cave A Novel by Georgina Harding The Solitude of Thomas Cave by Georgina Harding

Enjoyable historical fiction about a man surviving a winter on the Arctic island of Svalbard (you can see it at the very top of my map), a territory of Norway. Why anyone would choose to rough it in the harsh cold is completely beyond me, but it makes for interesting reading.

Wow! What an amazing book! I thought it would be just 1200 pages of war, but it wasn't. The hardest part (in the beginning) was trying to get down all the characters and their long Russian last names. I highly recommend it!

Not the easiest book to read, but very interesting. Hard to believe that this was written almost 1000 years ago.

I am really loving the trekking option. I don't know what took me so long to do it.

The life story of the Dalai Lama's mother, an amazing woman who had much hardship and suffering in her life. I can't imagine letting my 4 year-old child leave me to live in a monastery. The book provided a nice look into Tibetan culture.

The author was raised in the UK and only knew of Afghanistan from her father's descriptions, which depicted it as a beautiful and almost magical place. She got to finally go to Afghanistan as an adult while working as an undercover reporter. The Afghanistan she found was much different than the Afghanistan of her father's stories and recollections.

Considered to be one of the best Armenian poets despite his short life (He was 21 when he died of tuberculosis). His poetry is beautiful, lyrical, and full of the pain of one who is dying young, experiencing unrequited love, and writing about a country that had recently undergone horrible violence and persecution. I wish I could read Armenian to know the original words as Tourian had written them.

Diane | 13052 comments 30. Saudi Arabia: Inside The Kingdom My Life In Saudi Arabia by Carmen Bin Ladin Inside The Kingdom: My Life In Saudi Arabia by Carmen Bin Ladin.

I actually liked this book quite a bit. If you are looking to find out more about Osama Bin Laden, you won't find much about him in this book. She had very little interaction with him. This book was a good look into Saudi culture and the role of women, as seen from a European-raised woman who married into a Saudi family. I would be interested to hear a memoir from a women of a less affluent or influential family to see how much similarity there is. Although the author's life during her time in Saudi Arabia was very restricted, she had a lot of perks that a poor woman would not have.
