Sam I really don't get it! In my book, it says it is the first book in the redwall series, though on goodreads it says it is #13!

Meera The redwall series begins with these
Redwall (1986)
Mossflower (1988)
Mattimeo (1989)
Mariel of Redwall (1991)
Salamandastron (1992)
Martin the Warrior (1993)
Brocktree wa written in 2000 This book revolves around the badger Lord Brocktree, father of Boar the Fighter, grandfather of Bella of Brockhall, and great-grandfather of Sunflash the Mace. He sets out to find the ancient badger mountain stronghold of Salamandastron, aided by the quick talking haremaid Dorothea Duckfontein Dillworthy and otter Ruffgar Brookback.
However I didn't start in order, I just caught on to stories and times. Its like listening to bits and parts of family history, you keep adding stories of old and new characters book after book. I actually rea Loamhedge first

Karen If you read them in order, it will help you understand them better. If possible, try one on audio, they do such a great job and it is fun to listen.

johanna (jo) ... I think it might be confused, because there is a difference between the time when they were written and the order in which they fit in the series. e.g. Martin the Warrior really happened first ... (since half of the Legend of Luke was Martin finding his father's friends.) and yet Redwall is said to be the first in teh series.

Rachael I know it's confusing, but Lord Brocktree is the first book in the series chronologically. It wasn't the first book Jacques wrote, but I typically recommend people read them in chronological order rather than in order of publication.

Karen This is from http://www.redwallabbey.com/

"It is highly recommended that you read the books in the order they were published!

That way you avoid having some fun surprises spoiled.
You should definitely read Mossflower before The Long Patrol and Lord Brocktree, Salamandastron before Marlfox, Redwall before Taggerung and Mattimeo, and Mariel of Redwall before The Bellmaker. In other words, you really are best off reading them in the publication order.

For anyone who is interested, I, Snowfur, read them in the publication order, except Redwall and Mossflower were flipped around, so Mossflower was the first book in the series I read. Of course, at that time, Mattimeo was brand-new! I feel so old..."

I started the series in publication order part way through but it was confusing to try to do it chronologically. I agree with Snowfur's suggestion, it will make it more fun and won't spoil some surprises in the stories.

Cheers!

Dana Huffer This is the first book chronologically in the series, meaning that it takes place before the actual founding of Redwall Abbey or the birth of Martin the Warrior, etc. In terms of actual publication, it was the 13th of the Redwall books to actually be released.

Grant Brian Jacques didn't write the books in order of how they happened: Redwall was the "first book", but Lord Brocktree is essentially like Luke the warrior: They were wrote as a sort of memoir. He actually does "write them in order" ( see that Russano the wise is telling the story), but a lot of the stories are memoirs.

Thrace Liendshield I read them in the order written on the back of my copies of my books so:
Lord Brocktree
Martin The Warrior
Mossflower
The Legend of Luke
Outcast of Redwall
Mariel of Redwall
The Bellmaker
Salamandastron
Redwall
Mattimeo
The Pearls of Lutra
The Long Patrol
Marlfox
The Taggerung
Triss
Loamhedge
Rakkety Tam
High Rhulain
Eulalia!
Doomwyte
The Sable Queen
The Rogue Crew
