"Jean S. Harris (1923-2012), the private-school headmistress whose 1981 trial for the murder of a prominent Scarsdale, N.Y., physician [Dr. Tarnower] galvanized a nation with its story of vengeance by a woman scorned, died on Sunday at an assisted-living center in New Haven. She was 89." http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/29/nyr...
Published: December 28, 2012
"In her eight days on the witness stand, Mrs. Harris was able to describe her betrayal with an arch wit that charmed the courtroom. She recalled how she once discovered a birthday greeting from Mrs. Tryforos to Dr. Tarnower in a small advertisement on the front page of The New York Times, and how she responded: “Herman, why don’t you use the Goodyear blimp next time? I think it’s available.” (lol)
Bob Jones, NY disc jockey, heard on ‘Milkman’s Matinee’, dies at 70FROM: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/06/nyr...
Published: January 5, 2013
"Bob Jones, a mellow-voiced New York radio personality who was the last regular host of the historic WNEW-AM show “Milkman’s Matinee,” playing the music of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington as it slowly became harder to find on the dial, died on Dec. 29 in Manhattan. He was 70."
“Milkman’s Matinee” is one of my treasured memories from way back in the 1940s or 1950s.
MILKMAN'S MATINEE - ON WNEW RADIO YEARS AGO
“Milkman’s Matinee” was one of the earliest all-night radio shows, first heard during the big-band era. Mr. Jones hosted it from 1975 until 1979, when it went off the air, and again in the 1980s. He hosted another long-running show, “Make Believe Ballroom,” in the evenings during the ’80s.

Michael Cronan, Who Gave TiVo and Kindle Their Names, Dies at 61http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/06/bus...
Published: January 5, 2013
"Michael Cronan, a San Francisco-based graphic designer and marketing executive who placed his stamp on popular culture when he created the brand names TiVo and Kindle, died on Tuesday in Berkeley, Calif. He was 61."
"Believing that “we were naming the next TV,” Mr. Cronan recalled, “I thought it should be as close as possible to what people would find familiar, so it must contain T and V.”
“I started looking at letter combinations,” he added, “and pretty quickly settled on TiVo.” (The “Vo” portion, he said, had a connection to the Latin and Italian words for vocal sound and voice.)
Then came the search for a mascot that Mr. Cronan hoped “would become as recognizable as the mouse ears are to Disney.” He created a TV-shaped smiley character with the name TiVo inscribed on its face, rabbit ears suggesting an early TV set and large, splayed feet."
" When Amazon prepared to introduce its first electronic reader in 2007, it turned to Mr. Cronan, ... Mr. Cronan “wanted to create something small, humble, with no braggadocio,” while choosing an image that “was about starting something, giving birth to something.” He found the name, she said, by likening use of the new e-reader to “starting a fire.”"
Internet Activist, a Creator of RSS, Is Dead at 26, Apparently a Suicide"Aaron Swartz, a wizardly programmer who as a teenager helped develop code [RSS] that delivered ever-changing Web content to users and who later became a steadfast crusader to make that information freely available, was found dead on Friday in his New York apartment."
"One person remembered him as a 'a complicated prodigy.'"
===============================================
In a talk in 2007, Mr. Swartz described having had suicidal thoughts during a low period in his career. He also wrote about his struggle with depression, distinguishing it from sadness.
“Go outside and get some fresh air or cuddle with a loved one and you don’t feel any better, only more upset at being unable to feel the joy that everyone else seems to feel. Everything gets colored by the sadness.”
When the condition gets worse, he wrote, “you feel as if streaks of pain are running through your head, you thrash your body, you search for some escape but find none. And this is one of the more moderate forms.”

"Obituary: Why We Should Remember Aaron Swartz ... Swartz wasn’t an anarchist. He came to believe that copyright law had been abused and was being used to close off what, by law, should be open. It’s hard to find fault with his logic, and there’s much to admire in a man who, rather than become a small god of the Valley, was willing to court punishment to prove a point. The world will have no trouble remembering Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, and this is as it should be. But it should remember, too, people like Aaron Swartz, the ones who make those empires possible."
MY COMMENT: They should make a movie of this fellow's life. It not only encompasses the serious issue of suicide but also the issue of making "Web files free and open to the public", something that Aaron Swartz was pushing for.

Abigail Van Buren - 7/4/1918 - 1/16/2013"Pauline Friedman Phillips, who under the name of Abigail Van Buren, wrote the long-running "Dear Abby" advice column that was followed by millions of newspaper readers throughout the world, has died. She was 94."

There was a moving tribute to Dear Abby on our religious page a week ago written by her daughter. It was so nice to read about a celebrity's daughter saying such praise of her mother rather than the confession types. I was totally impressed with their relationship.
Below is an interactive link to a NY Times webpage entitled: "Notable Deaths of 2012".The page shows hyperlinked faces of those who died in 2012, listed by month. Clicking on each photo takes you to a blurb and a link to the full obituary.

I didn't even realize that some of these people were dead! Sobering thought.
I hadn't realized most of the entertainers had died, Joy. I live under a rock, I guess. Davy Jones from the Monkeys & Earl Scruggs, bluegrass picker extraordinaire caught my eye immediately. Charles Durning & Jack Klugman also caught my eye. I had known about the authors & some of the others. There's just too much news to keep up with. Thanks for posting this. Very interesting to skim through.
You're welcome, Jim. I had forgotten that Phyllis Diller had died. What I like about the obituary blurbs is that the last sentence of each blurb states how old they were when they died. Klugman was 90. Durning was 89. Jack LaLanne was 96! Diller was 95! Amazing!
10/25/13 - "Marcia Wallace, Comic Actress on ‘The Simpsons,’ Dies at 70" [played the part of a receptionist on “The Bob Newhart Show” in the 1970s]When "asked what influences had kept her feet on the ground", she said: “Midwestern work ethic ... I’ve always been an optimist and a real hard worker and had a passion. I figured I may as well go for my dream.”

Lou Reed died this week, too. He was a rock singer famous for "Walk on the Wild Side". Here's a short article on him:http://www.smh.com.au/comment/obituar...

Warning, it's about transsexuality & drugs. It was very far out there for its time - 1972. The original album, Transformer, was produced by David Bowie.

I didn't recognize most of the names, but it was nice to see the average age - must have been 90 or so. Well up there. Quite a few 100+.

Doris Roberts has died at the age of 90.Picture & info: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005368/?r...
Field: Entertainment
Info: She appeared on many, many TV series, including "Angie", "Remington Steele" and "Everybody Loves Raymond"
Date of Birth: 11/04/1925
Date of Death: 04/17/2016
FROM: http://www.deadoraliveinfo.com/dead.N...
I remember her as the "the meddling, strong-willed family matriarch on "Everybody Loves Raymond" (CBS, 1996-2005). ... Well past the common age of retirement and well past the show's celebrated end, Roberts maintained a reputation as one of the big and small screen's most iconic mothers, and she continued to be a welcome sight as a television guest star and film player." http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005368/bi...
"died in her sleep of natural causes" http://deadline.com/2016/04/doris-rob...
I can't believe she's gone.
I didn't watch that show so don't remember her. Some of the listed deaths ring a bell but lots don't for me. I will say the "situation comedies" were of a better nature than the ones now that border on what would never have passed in good taste back then. I miss "I Love Lucy," and the "Dick Van Dyke show" and Mary Tyler Moore and "All in the Family," among others.
Nina, I can't get used to the new TV shows either. I do watch the late-night talk shows and enjoy them when I'm not reading or playing FunTrivia. You would have enjoyed Doris Roberts. Netflix has the DVDs for the show she was in, "Everybody Loves Raymond".
