Karol I've only read four so far this year. (Sigh)

1. The Case of the Velvet Claws by Erle Stanley Gardner, 4/5 stars, 210 pages

2. The Case of the Rolling Bones by Erle Stanley Gardner, 4/5 stars, 202 pages

3. Boy: Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl, 5/5 stars, 160 pages

4. Outlaw Mountain by J.A. Jance, 5/5 stars, 368 pages

(940 pages read this year)

Karol 5. Tea Time for the Traditionally Built by Alexander McCall Smith, 5/5 stars, 212 pages

(1,152 pages read this year)

Karol 6. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, 5/5 stars, 273 pages

What is it about this novel that grabs my interest . . . I read it only 4 years ago and picked it up again this year. It is so rich in its visualization . . . although the genre is "horror" - Victorian style - it seems to be a bit of a comfort read to me.

Kay, neither of us have done hardly any reading this year.

Andrea - yes, it's a sad state of affairs!

Karol 7. Talk of the Town by Lisa Wingate, 4/5 stars, 368 pages.

Enjoyed this light-hearted romantic comedy . . . from a Christian perspective.

Dawn Michelle | 3487 comments "Boy" is on my TBR list and "Frankenstein" scared the CRAP out of me when I was younger. MAN! And then I saw the movie with Robert De Niro as the "monster" and WOW, was that a scary, powerful movie. VERY much like the book. I haven't read it since I was a teen, but I still think that should I read it again, it would be ALL in daylight!!! :-)

Karol Dawn Michelle, "Boy" is a remarkably good book, I think. It was illuminating to read about Roald Dahl's youth. I think it explains why his stories have a bit of a dark side . . . for example, why "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was written in the style depicted by the Johnny Depp version of the movie and not the Gene Wilder one!

The only one of his books I ever actually read as a kid was The Witches, but that one definitely had a dark side... actually it scared me more than I was willing to admit at the time! It was my first encounter with fiction that claimed to be true, and I wasn't quite sure if I believed it or not.

The Witches movies scared the pants off of me. Lol. Haven't seen it since I was little.

message 13: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3487 comments I have not read The Witches yet, but loved Charlie and The BFG. DID not like the one where they stewed and poisoned the grandma. SERIOUSLY twisted and disturbing.

I have friends that thought Coraline was scary. What did you all think of that book [not Dahl I know, but Gaiman can be scary too]?

message 14: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I never read (or saw) Coraline.

Coraline, both book and movie, are creepy.

Kay, I thought we both said we were going to have a better year and read up a storm?!?!

Looks like fall is here and we are in the same boat again...hahah

Karol 7. Talk of the Town by Lisa Wingate, 4/5 stars

8. To Love Anew by Bonnie Leon, 3/5 stars

Epic fail for 2013 with only 10% of the goal reached! Well - it has been an "interesting" year . . .

I think there is a Chinese curse that says "May you live in interesting times."

message 18: by Dawn Michelle (new)

Dawn Michelle | 3487 comments It is NEVER an epic fail if you did actually READ books!! :-)
We can only strive to do better than we have before and so I am praying 2014 is a better and more stellar reading year for you!!! :-)

Karol Thanks, Dawn Michelle! I really appreciate that.
