I read that! I really enjoyed it as well. I agree with all her points. Speaking for myself, I don't mind that the modern Irene Adlers are different from canon.
There was a particularly interesting debate (argument?) between DianeChambers and Esther Inglis-Arkell (the article's author) in the comments section. You can read the end of the comment thread here and scroll up. I like DianeChambers's reading of the episode, though I myself don't read it that way.
Also while I was reading the comments, I came across a link to this blog (don't worry about the over 14 stuff, there is nothing racy at all on there). I like that she emphasizes the differences between Bohemia!Adler and Belgravia!Adler. It seems like a lot of people who defend Sherlock's Irene Adler want to convince me that she is just like Conan Doyle's Irene Adler... and that's just not gonna happen. Reading that post helped me understand Belgravia!Adler's personality and motivations as they are on her own show. I also liked how she didn't ignore the dead body double, and that it is possible that Moriarty is still the "puppetmaster" despite her scheming (which is how I read the episode).
I think that the Sherlock series missed the mark with Adler. The term "adventuress" did not necessarily refer to a courtesan - it was simply a woman who might use dishonest means for gain. Because that's not a dated concept, it's not one that updates the story - the details of Irene's chicanery may have changed, but not the fundamentals.I would have concentrated on the other aspect of Irene's character, the musical one - because that is something that she and Holmes have in common, it's one thing that gives a credible dimension to his attraction to her.
I didn't see the second Downey film, so I can't really comment on that, and I don't really remember a lot about the Irene of the first one.
