This is a good one to read. I think they are making a movie out of it too. Suspenseful but also it's a fantasy. Love it.

I have already read this book. I sadly did not enjoy it. I felt that it was stereotypical and not very nice towards the south. Maybe I felt this way because I am from the south.
Hey Ebony.. thanks for your share!
I think you are right when you said It seems little stereotypical, I mean, I have also noticed in first 100 or so pages there were 2 times when i knew what would happen next :) But then I also thought, this may be because we readers have very good imagination skills.. :D
And Every book carries a theme.. IMHO the story and setting reminded a lot of my native place but it's not to say I am not liking the book :)

ya know.. I am so glad i didn't follow the " read 50 pages, don't like it throw it" rule on this series =3
haha.. that's a good analogy, Versa.. n I couldn't agree more for the fact that I'm reading Ebook and hearing audiobook @ same time.. :)
Okay, maybe it's just me, but I took FOREVER to read this book, because I just couldn't get into it. I kept coming up with excuses to do something else, like ironing, which I hate. But since I'm one of those people who has to read the whole book once I start, I finally hurried through it, so I could get on to City of Bones.I don't know why...it just seemed slow and painful, which is weird for me, because rarely do I not like a book. This time I celebrated when I finished. I thought the premise was interesting, but that's about it.
Sorry to sound negative, I'm not usually like that. I do hope others liked it more than me! I expect the movie will be sooooo much better than the book.
It happens to all of us Heather, we all (at one point or other) face this issue. so it's okay..
Btw, I am reading it as E-book and Audiobook... Yes, there are few clichés but easy to be ignored. Now that I am half-way through the book, can't wait to finish it..

Heather, we all had it in the first 100 pages. stay on! and it will stick and when it does... oh well.. you'll find out.
Hmmm as I prepare to read this I already have a lot of helpful hints from this discussion:1. Take the ideas about the south presented in this book with a grain of salt
2. Charge through the first 100 pages, something good will be on the other side
yeah...the first 100 pages or so are nothing different from the thousands of paranormal-fantasy books out there..Let's see what the other pages will bring!!

@soul Hello. ^_^ I think that my problem with the book was that I was sooo excited! I mean how many YA novels take place in the South? Virtually none. Then everyone was like OMG BEST BOOK EVER! So when I got it and started reading it and Ethen says that the reason he doesn't have a southern accent is because he was raised by educated people. I was over it. lol I tried to go on but it was just one of those things where you hit a wall and your like no....lol I know that just because an author writes it does not mean they actually believe it themselves but wow. (btw I am not trying to ruin this for anyone that is loving this book! I like it when people find books they love< even if I hate it!)
That's an insightful comment.. thnx Ebony :)
There are two things that i would like to brought forth from above discussion, the things that i follow regularly..
First (and most important one) is, "If you want to enjoy the book(& story) then don't keep any expectations.."
and Second one is, "Every author has something to tell.." so understand the context of the story(moral, if you will..).
Even though I follow the whole God concept, that didn't kept me from enjoying "HP" series
because when i read it, I took it's context that it's about friendship, family, struggle, good vs. bad, faith etc.. rather than Just Witchcraft..
I know, Everything boils down to personal choice.. but still give it a thought :)
wish you all goodread! :D

The thing with Beautiful Creatures was that for me it was hard to separate its context from the fact that the authors continued to virtual spell out that if you were from the south you were stupid. It was not a passing comment but a continual rub in the face. Don't get me wrong, that is not the only reason I hate the book. Ethan was not believable as a man to me. I felt like he was a girl stuck in a man's body. Sometimes I would read it and really forget he was a boy. He was good at EVERYTHING! There was no flaw. He was good at basketball(please forgive me if this is the wrong sport it has been a while since I read it), school, everything. I have never really hated a book but I do really dislike this one. I have read numerous books where the protagonist believed in something I did not (i.e atheist, racism(I am mixed), drug abuse etc.) One of my favorites, A Fault In Our Stars, mentions twice that neither protagonist believed in God in the "normal" way. Hazel(main character in TFIOS) says that she felt she did not need to believe in God to pray. However, those things did not bother me because like you said that was not what the book was about. It just made the character up. It gave us insight into her wonderful mind. However, Ethan was almost obsessed with his thoughts on southern culture. To me if you are going to call a book a "southern Gothic Novel" you need to really embellish on the southern part because that is what I expect. They did not do that for me. I wanted a rich southern background and old grandma's that gossiped all day. I give them credit, they did try to put that in, it just failed because then Ethan would comment on how stupid it was. So how then can I relate to Ethen if he is so full of himself that I can not even realize what the story is he is trying to tell. There are other ways to show that the south might not have been as educated as it should have been. The book that the authors used as inspiration , To Kill A Mockingbird, did an excellent job of this. It showed that the south was indeed backwards without putting an "However, I(the protagonist) am way hotter and better then they will ever be" on it. If you take away the southern part there is nothing else besides the stereotypical romance. The same dominate can not be with the other partner because they must protect them. SO then what is the context? What was the author trying to tell me? These are all rhetorical questions. I understand what they really wanted to tell me but it was blurred by Ethan's thoughts. The only moral of the story I got was "The South is Really REALLY stupid." I do agree that you should not allow hype to get you excited. I read this a while ago when I first discovered the booktube and goodreads community. I did not realize at the time that I was not a Hype girl. I generally don't like books that many people continue to talk about or feel is so "new".
Again, I want everyone to know I do not want anyone to think I want you to hate this book like I do. I just am sharing my own personal book thoughts. I am glad that people like it. It keeps reading alive. I am just sharing how I feel about it. ^_^ I am still going to watch the movie when it comes to Netflix. XD

Yes, it was a bit long. >_> I couldn't help myself. HAHA. Yes, I do read manga. However, I am ashamed to say it has been a while since I have read any. Sad times! My favorite would be vampire knight and Fruits Basket. I also love the anime that goes with it. How about you? I want to read that! I am hoping to be able to afford it on my kindle. ^_^
So long we have book that we can discuss (and do some Brainstorming... ) i don't mind if it's Beautiful creature or what! :)
Btw, for past 2 days, didn't get any chance to pick up Beautiful Creatures.. been busy of sorts.. and I have started with A Game of Thrones again! :)

@ Ebony :
Yeah, I follow Manga (a lot) and anime.. well anime goes without saying.. :D
There are hundreds i have read n watched, in varying genres including, Action, Adult, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Ecchi, Fantasy, Historical etc.. I never had the appetite for Horror n way toooooo dark anime(or manga for that matter)..
I like simple true to life or adventure based ones like "kaichou wa maid-sama", FMA, Hunter.X.Hunter etc..
I heard Fruits Basket is good one, but never got chance to actually read it.. may be some day..
