Kashyap Anyone figure out ANYTHING abt who or what the Black Prism is? I loved the books The Black Prism & The Blinding Knife, but none gives any clues as to what's the black prism?
The only guess I have is it's a "who" and not "what" because a person (Guile) is the "Prism", perhaps he's the "White Prism"..
PS: I searched for "Black Prism" in Kindle in both books and it's not in the actual story text in either of them!

Courtney My personal theory is that Kip Guile will be the Black Prism. He's already been able to use quite a few colors and I think with time and training his magic will only become stronger. Black absorbs all light, so I think it would have to be someone who can use all colors.

I agree. Kip is ripening into quite the power...he's not finished!

Notelppa Maybe its referring to Gavin? He did steal the power...

Thats not a bad theory. I think Kip or Gavin could be it since Gavin did make White Lux at one point. Kip is getting very strong quickly.

infael Gavin has been imprisoned for years and his life, identity and woman stolen by his brother. Gavin's the Black.

Kip in the Blinding Knife (and the series as a whole) seems to be pointing toward him becoming the mythical Lightbringer. I don't know if that entails he can use black luxin and hence be the Black Prism, but this is just my thoughts.

Now that Mr. Weeks is probably reading this, he's going to go back to his final draft and make it so some off-the-wall character becomes the Lightbringer now ;) Most likely that girl who has paryl for the life of me I can't remember her name now.

Donna Are we talking Gavin as Dazen here or the real Gavin?

I'm thinking that Dazen is/was the Black Prism but he's in all sorts of trouble at the moment. Agree that Kip is probably the Lightbringer but with Mr Weeks one never can be too sure of anything, which is why I like his books so much.

Clinton I agree guys! Haha

Kashyap well, Kip is almost guaranteed to be the Lightbringer here is the excerpt from appendix:
Lightbringer, the:  A controversial figure in prophecy and mythology. Attributes that most agree on are that he is male, will slay or has slain gods and kings, is of mysterious birth, is a genius of magic, a warrior who will sweep, or has swept, all before him, a champion of the poor and downtrodden, great from his youth, He Who Shatters.

Of course Mr. Weeks could as well be fooling me, but based on available info I'll surely bet on it.
If the Black Prism is different from Lightbringer then I would expect Kip to be the Lightbringer and not Black Prism.
Finally, there is the episode from first book wherein Kip sucks all the fire from the whole camp of Gardul's army and then sends out fire and fireballs from his hand (instead of luxin). And before his sucks in the fire he also sets a guy ablaze somehow. Donno what to make of that..

Kashyap Ah and then there is of course the Zymun Guile.. you never know.. :)

Sub-red is pretty much heat (correctly drafted it'll produce fire crystals ["Karris can’t quite draft sustainable sub-red—what they call a fire crystal."], which go on fire when exposed to the air, incorrectly is just fire ["Her red arc extended into the sub-red so far that she could draft fire, but she couldn’t draft stable sub-red luxin."]), and sub-red drafters can draw heat from their surroundings (like Gavin did while in the blue prison).
So he was probably just absorbing all the heat and drafting it into fire; maybe drafting red into projectiles, and setting them on fire. That's usually what's done: a red drafter puts down pyre jelly stuff (usually on an enemy), and sub-reds set it all on fire.

That's how I see it.

infael Actually, Dazen imprisoned Gavin and took his place.

Aprile I always assummed it was a reference to his character, not an actual title. (The real Dazen that is)

Sebastiaan My theory is that the real Gavin (imprisoned) was/is the black Prism.

I got the impression that Dazen (Prism, took over Gavin's life) is the real prism and that the real Gavin, with the help of Andross, somehow used the Blinding Knife to get powers equal to those of a prism.

The Black Prism could simply refer to the fact that (real) Gavin is a false (black) prism.

Sara Martínez Pérez-Tomé I think it is Kip Guile, because, it's quite certain that he's going to be the prism, and now he is from the Blackguard.
So you have two concepts: the fact that Kip is able to reflect all the colors (like a Prism), but he is from the Blackguard, what makes him a Prism...and a Blackguard...and all together makes the Black Prism :)
(That is my opinion :))

Stewart I like it!

Avacairen I don't think that Kip is about to become the prism, and neither do I think that he's the lightbringer. I believe he's just a polychromat due to his heritage and that Weeks has someone entirely different in mind for becoming the lightbringer. After all there are still characters like Zymun White Oak and I think the fact that Dazen drafted white luxin isn't going to irrelevant either.
I personally believe that Kip will be able to split up the light like a prism, but he won't become one. He'll end up at the order of the broken eye (the new book title gives a clear hint that this topic will be a matter in the 3rd book) voluntarily but rather not, and his splitting up the light will be of some use then. (as a quick reminder: the cloaks these assassins at Janus Borig's house required the splitting of light to actually use them)

infael It's what, a month til Broken Eye is released? Sigh. I already pre ordered and waiting....
