Olivia Morrow The Shadow of the Lamp is an intriguing tale about a girl named Molly who overcomes many obstacles during the Crimean War. The story begins with Molly working as a maid to support her family. She abruptly loses her job due to false accusations, and she sets out on a mission which is to avoid working in the factory. Molly soon learns that Florence Nightingale is looking for nurses to care for the soldiers fighting in the Crimean War. She applies and is rejected due her lack of experience, but does not give up and sneaks on the departing ship. However, she is not quite prepared for the harsh reality of war. The terrible injuries and conditions she witnesses horrify her, but she realizes that she has a natural talent for nursing. She also finds her heart torn between two men. Dr. Maclean, who is a young physician at the hospital and is very compassionate. The other man, Will worked with Molly in London and helped her when she lost her job. All these emotions confuse Molly and she must decide which of the two men she loves more. The ending was a surprise for me and maybe it will be one for you. The Shadow of the Lamp is a novel sure to be loved by people who enjoy history and romance. I would rate this book five out of five stars because it was extremely well written and Molly was a believable and likable character. I look forward to reading another book by Susanne Dunlap.
