The Executioner's Song...complete.
Moving on to the year 2009 and Lev Grossman's The Magicians.
2009 Lev Grossman's The Magicians...complete. 3 stars by the skin of its teeth. Almost had to give it 2 stars but thankfully it picked up in the last 100 pages. Of note, I gave The Road 3 stars (writing was excellent, downright beautiful in certain places if drear, but the story fell a little flat for me).
And I gave The Executioner's Song 4 stars. Excellent story. The writing was sometimes dry but kept my interest. The author did engage in some of my pet peeves and had some repetitive habits in narration but, overall, quite good. I probably would have given it 3.5 if the site allowed but push come to shove, I thought it deserved to be rounded up rather than down.
While fearing I'd duplicated a year with a second book from 2009, I was thrilled to discover that Darling Jim by Christian Mork was first published in 2007. Yay! This one I gave 4 stars as one of the most enjoyable reads of the past few months. Then I moved on to 2012's Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife by Even Alexander. After much internal debate, I gave it 2 stars. While interesting, it was not gripping and I was left a bit disappointed. Still, not a bad book and certainly Dr. Alexander's experience is an intriguing one.

I gave it 3 stars but probably would have given it 2 and a half if I could figure out how to give half stars. It was interesting but I had a hard time connecting to the main character and only really got invested towards the end of the book.
Good luck with all the challenges you're taking part in. It looks like you're getting on brilliantly.

Of note, Neverwhere was a definite 4 star book. Entertaining with just the right notes of horror. I'm not a huge horror fan and I doubt this properly qualifies as a horror novel but the elements it includes were properly creepy/disturbing without going overboard. And I appreciated the touches of humor throughout and, thankfully, characters I both liked and sympathized with. 4 stars.

You are doing so good on your every year challenge. I keep reading books out of my years to match other challenges!
Thanks, Jodi. I'm not completely guilt-free on reading outside the years though. Went out for a buddy-read and, as you can see, have doubled up books on a few years for various reasons. But I'm working on it. I like the idea of the challenge. :-)

You are doing so well with the every year challenge. I keep reading books from 2010-2013...I can't get away from those books.
I totally get it...the more recent the book, the more I want to read. But it's sorta cool to discover books I missed from those earlier years. :-)
Filling in the year 1994 with Jennifer Egan's The Invisible Circus. 3 stars. The author has a compelling narrative voice but the story didn't quite keep up imho. Still, enjoyable. I liked her later book The Keep much better.Every Year Challenge Books

Filling in 1984 (and book 19 of 35) with Shapechangers by Jennifer Roberson. I'd have to give it 2.5 stars...entertaining enough I suppose and a quick read...but the quality of the narration was sub-par with stilted dialogue, forced plot-leaps and an MC that came off as shallow. Filling in the year 2000 with Ursula LeGuin's The Telling. I tend to have mixed feelings about LeGuin's work. On the one hand, her worlds are wonderfully complex and her writing pristine. I find something of a fascination in reading. But, at the same time, I always have this sensation of distance between myself and the characters and this limits my enjoyment. I had the same issue with this book but still thought this was one of the more enjoyable pieces of her work that I have read. 3 stars.Year 22 of 35.

Year 1985. Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. This has been recommended to me before and I've wanted to read it in advance of the movie...so I finally did it. And it is really a very cool story! Entertaining, disturbing, an MC you can't help but feel for...yeah. 4 stars. I had a little bit of trouble reconciling the character's age with the maturity of the narrative no matter the explanation...but it's well well worth the read. So don't let that stop you.

Duplicating a year in the Every Year challenge but completing the types of non-fiction challenge with The Rapture by Liz Jenson. 3 stars. It was entertaining but didn't wow.Yes, it's fiction. Thankfully, the non-fiction challenge allowed alternative fiction choices for each category.
I committed to 3 books for the types of non-fiction challenge:
1985's Ender's Game 4 stars for the Science Fiction
1980's Housekeeping at 4.5 stars for the Single Word Title category
2009's The Rapture at 3 stars to fit the first person narrative category

Hey Anna, nice going on your challenges! I really need to get around to reading Ender's Game, I'm glad to see that you like it, the YA-ness of it has been holding me back (and the other 100 books to read as well).
Filling in 2003 with We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. I gave it 4 stars. It took me a while to get into the style of it...the story is told through a series of letters and I did predict a couple of things...but it was engrossing. Every Year Challenge Books

Filling in 1982 with John Saul's The God Project. 4 stars. It's a quick read but utterly engrossing, pins and needles, all that. Very creepy, disturbing...and surprisingly still relevant considering it was written and published in 1982. I enjoyed it very much despite the unsettled feeling the story left me with.Every Year Challenge Books

Filling in 1983 with John Gardner's On Becoming a Novelist. 3 stars. I admit the whole "how to be a writer" book is a guilty pleasure of mine. I read a lot of them. I thought this was a good one but not especially earth-shattering. Admittedly, it may have suffered for the fact I've read so many. Lol! Every Year Challenge Books
