message 1: by Julie (new)

Julie (minerva1221) Not a lot of activity in this group...perhaps everyone is too busy reading? :) If so, what? I'd love to hear what everyone is reading/has just finished/thoughts.

message 2: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Ferguson (ruthdfw) | 1 comments Just finished a book by a local author that was great!! When the Day of Evil Comes

message 3: by Julie (new)

Julie (minerva1221) Looks like an interesting book, Ruth. I may have to add that one to Mount TBR!

message 4: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I am reading "What was Lost" and "The Shack" for some book clubs. Both interesting, but probably won't make it onto the "Top Books" list.

message 5: by Scott (last edited Mar 13, 2009 02:10AM) (new)

Scott E | 17 comments I'm currently reading "A Separate Peace", which apparently (based on the reveiws I've read here) I should have read by high school...not sure how that escaped me. I just finished "Intimacy" by Hanif Kureishi, and "Ellen Foster" by Kaye Gibbons...both very short novels. Was not impressed w/ Intimacey (...boring), but Ellen Foster was very good...as is A Separate Peace.

On deck..."The Dew Breaker" by Edwidge Danticat and "Play It As It Lays" by Joan Didion.

message 6: by Julie (new)

Julie (minerva1221) Scott, it must have escaped me as well. I've not read it.

I'm currently about halfway through with "Rant" by Chuck Palahniuk. It's been interesting so far, but the last few chapters have thrown me for a loop. Hopefully it will all make sense to me soon!

message 7: by Scott (new)

Scott E | 17 comments Thanks Julie...I knew I couldn't have been the only one! I did finish it, though...and it's not bad at all. Very quick, easy read, but with depth as well.

"Play It As It Lays" by Joan Didion is next, and I've moved "A Mercy" by Toni Morrison in line. I've never read anything by TM...I wonder if I should read something else first?

message 8: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (blackwalkerproductions) | 11 comments Been busy re reading a lot of the books I have, as well as writing. Found out that my sequal will now be out in November.

message 9: by Julie (new)

Julie (minerva1221) I finished Rant this weekend and am now reading Bonk The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex as part of a bookray through bookcrossing. I've never read one of Mary Roach's books before, but this one is informative, fascinating, and funny!

message 10: by Scott (new)

Scott E | 17 comments Finished "A Mercy" by Toni Morrison. Took a little while to get into but once I did it was really good. This is the first TM I've read, and haven't heard much of how this compares w/ her other work. But by reputation, novels such as Beloved and Song of Solomon must be unbelievable reads...can't wait!!

Currently reading "Indignation" by Philip Roth. About 70 pages in and I'm hooked. I've read "Sabbath's Theatre" by Roth a few years ago. Two different worlds by comparison. "Sabbath's" is a raw, almost dirty book.

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Milne (sarahand) Hi, I'm moving to Frisco in two weeks, so I hope you'll forgive me joining a bit early. :)

I'm currently reading Possession by A.S. Byatt. Just started, but it's supposed to be a great book!

message 12: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (blackwalkerproductions) | 11 comments Well, I'm doing more writing than reading... have to knock out the third in my sequel... but, just picked up Promise of the Witch King by R.A. Salvatore.

message 13: by Julie (new)

Julie (minerva1221) Welcome to DFW, Sarah!

message 14: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (blackwalkerproductions) | 11 comments Yeah, welcome to DFW, since I forgot to say it earlier... lol

message 15: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I read Possession a few years ago. I enjoyed it, but liked it even better when I heard Ms. Byatt speak. If you ever have a chance, she is a great story-teller.

message 16: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Julie, I have Stiff on my TBR list, I just found out about this author the other day here on Goodreads. Let me know how you like Bonk.

message 17: by Patricia (new)

Patricia I just finished The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and will start Olive Kitteridge tonight.

message 18: by Scott (new)

Scott E | 17 comments Finished The Corrections (Whew!!!) and short story collection, Unearned Pleasures, by Ursula Hegi. Need a break from lit...starting A Morning For Flamingos by James Lee Burke (crime fiction).

message 19: by Scott (new)

Scott E | 17 comments also, while reading The Corrections, read Breakfast at Tiffany's and Memories of My Melancholy Whores....two short books.

message 20: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Milne (sarahand) Recently finished Possession, Lorna Doone, and The Host. I'm working on Bleak House, but haven't done much reading over the past week as I have been making the move down here and trying to get settled in.

I loved The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, but then I am a sucker for Hamlet-esque stories.

Thanks for the welcome!

message 21: by Patricia (new)

Patricia I'm currently reading I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith (author of 101 Dalmations).

message 22: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Finished I Capture The Castle and I'm currently reading Night by Elie Wiesel. I started this last night and was up until 5:00 am, I couldn't put the book down.

message 23: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Patricia wrote: "I'm currently reading I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith (author of 101 Dalmations). "

What did you think? I started it but haven't finished it yet? Also read Night and loved it.

message 24: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Heidi, I really enjoyed I Capture The Castle. It had a great ending and it was a funny and enjoyable read.

message 25: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I'll have to pick it up again next week. Right now I am re-reading Life of Pi" for a book club.

message 26: by Julie (last edited Jun 24, 2009 10:14AM) (new)

Julie (minerva1221) I recently started Eat, Pray, Love One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia. A couple of friends highly recommended it, so we'll see...

I couldn't stand this book. Most all of my friends love it and I just thought it came across as very poor-little-rich-girl. Did anyone else here dislike it?

I just finished reading The Road for a local book club I joined recently. I wasn't impressed with it AT ALL. I had to force myself to finish it. Apparently others in the club really enjoyed it so it will be interesting to see how the discussion goes.

message 28: by Alex (new)

Alex | 2 comments Hi everyone, I'm newish to DFW and this group. I just finished reading Nick Flynn's new memoir The Ticking Is the Bomb: A Memoir. It was wonderful. I taught The Road this semester at TCU--I really like that book--but I have friends that don't like McCarthy's style and really disliked that book. Also, my new memoir Happy was just reviewed in the Dallas Morning News, and I'm reading at Legacy Books on Thursday. Hope to meet some of you there. Happy: A Memoir

message 29: by Micah (new)

Micah R. (dyonus) | 2 comments I'm reading several things at the moment, including the second Sherlock Holmes book, rereading Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones, rereading Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, and a couple of other things. Mainly focusing on Deep Secret right now.

message 30: by Allison (new)

Allison Wonderland (youngdefective) | 1 comments Just joined - hello from the Deep Ellum area!

I'm currently reading Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (somehow neglected in both my high school and college courses) and Wizard and Glass by Stephen King.

message 31: by Heather (new)

Heather (applecat) | 3 comments Just finished "A Wrinkle in Time". Didn't read it as a kid and maybe that's a bad thing b/c as an adult I just could not appreciate it. I can't remember the last time I wanted so badly to strangle the heroine of a book. Meg is seriously annoying.

Next up, I think I'll either be reading "Peter Pan" or "Juliet Naked" b/c I currently have those on my Kindle.

message 33: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (tx_mom_) i just downloaded At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks
i just finished reading Marked (House of Night, #1) by P.C. Cast this morning

message 34: by Ronda (new)

Ronda Tutt (rondatutt) Hi everyone, I am new to the group. I don't live in the DFW/Dallas area but I live south of Austin. My daughter Heather currently lives in Garland but just bought a house in Wylie and will be moving there the end of July. I will definitly tell her about this group as well.

I am currently reading the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon - I am on the 3rd book Night Embrace

Its been a great series to read so far.

I love to read paranormal, fantasy, mystery, romance, and other interesting things.

Christine (cdunbar) Heather wrote: "Just finished "A Wrinkle in Time". Didn't read it as a kid and maybe that's a bad thing b/c as an adult I just could not appreciate it. I can't remember the last time I wanted so badly to strangle ..."

That's so weird. I just finished reading A Wrinkle in Time too! And I feel the same way about Meg. God, she was annoying.

At the moment I'm between three books:
What Happens in London by Julia Quinn - Historical Romance, 2nd in series
Dirty Little Secrets by C.J. Omololu - Young Adult, first novel by author
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky - Young Adult, first novel by author

message 36: by Ella (new)

Ella | 1 comments Micah wrote: "I'm reading several things at the moment, including the second Sherlock Holmes book, rereading Deep Secret by Diana Wynne Jones, rereading Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, and a couple of othe..."

Did you read second book of NOTW, "The Wise Man's Fear" yet?

message 37: by Debbie (new)

Debbie I'm currently reading the Inkheart trilogy, The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins and Huckleberry Finn.

message 38: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Brick (lbrick363) I just finished Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and found it to be very boring and weird. I am now just finishing up Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. So far the book is pretty interesting. I am also in the beginning of Fifty Shades Darker. Hoping this one is not as dull as the first. :-)

message 39: by Megs (new)

Megs (magnus_pegasus) I recently finished up Mystic River , and I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to read some of his other books! Currently, I am reading The Subtle Knife. I loved The Golden Compass , and I'm looking forward to reading The Amber Spyglass when I finish.

message 40: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Brick (lbrick363) I read The Golden Compass. I actually have all three in the series. It is an all-in-one book. I feel like sometimes my list TBR list is so long, I do not know where to start! :-) There is so much to read and so little time!

message 41: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Brick (lbrick363) Right now I am reading The Redbreast. So far it is really great! I am torn between reading Wife of the Gods or Sky Burial: An Epic Love Story of Tibet. They both sound so good and I cannot decide which to start first. :-)

message 42: by BeeSquid (new)

BeeSquid (squidbee) | 2 comments I am currently reading The Meaning of Tingo. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in linguistics.

message 43: by Brian (new)

Brian | 2 comments I'm reading The Wastelands, the third book in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. The first two were great and I expect to finish the entire series in the next few months!

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

I am currently reading Found by Margeret Peterson Haddox and Four by Veronica Roth.

message 45: by Marie (new)

Marie | 3 comments I'm currently reading Howl's Moving Castle and before that I had read the Private School Murders by James Patterson

message 46: by Alex (new)

Alex | 2 comments Donkey Gospels!

message 47: by Robin (new)

Robin (robin_sowton) I'm reading 'Lowland' by Jhumpa Lahiri. It's our book club pick for this month.

message 48: by Adrianne (new)

Adrianne Cole | 3 comments Just finished The Skook. Loved it. I need advice on which book to pick next. I need a era page turner. I have to make it count because I don't have much time to read (my kids are 1, 2, and 4). I have We were the Mulvaneys. I was thinking if reading that or something by Neil Gaimann or Stephen King. I would like to read something by King, but don't know where I would start! Any suggestion on a good Stephen king book to begin with?

message 49: by Marie (new)

Marie | 3 comments I've found that Carrie and Cujo are good King books to start out with. They're both short, but they don't display some of King's abilities, so a short story collection like Full Dark, No Stars is also really good.

message 50: by Adrianne (new)

Adrianne Cole | 3 comments Thank you!
