I just tried for three of my favorites in wildly disparate genres: J.R.R. Tolkien, John Sandford, William Gibson and got Hubert Selby Jr.: author of Last Exit To Brooklyn, which you just rated highly! I guess I gotta read it now (I've actually played with Gnooks before, but never gone beyond that)

LOL - I got Sandford on my first try, and Selby on my second play around with it!

I'm going to have to play around with this some more! I put in Margaret Atwood, Philip K. Dick, and David Mitchell, and got a whole bunch of authors I'd never even heard of. Of course, I kept clicking "I don't know it" to get to the next one without writing any of them down or researching them on goodreads, so now I'll need to try again.ETA: Oh, I see, it gives you a list of the authors at the end when it runs out of recommendations! Cool.
I have tried the Literature Map before and not found it super accurate or helpful. It's fun to play around with if you're bored and looking for new authors, though.

So I thought I'd test a few out.
Experiment #1 - Gnooks>Gnod's Suggestions: http://www.gnooks.com/faves.php
Enter 3 authors you like, it'll spit out suggested authors to try.
Experiment = Success! I've just discovered a new author. It also spat out other authors I do, in fact, enjoy.
Result = Ruby's Stamp of Approval
If you've tried any of these kinds of resources for book/author suggestions based on the things you know you like. Post 'em here...
