I'm glad someone is discussing this book. I always found it to be totally ignored / underrated. Interesting observations Daniel, I presume for some school assignment? One thing you don't mention is that the action was seen through the eyes of a man remembering how he saw things as a child.

The frontier isn't as boring as movies make them, and it is much like farm life. They are self sustaining meaning they only take what they need. People who grow up there are tough and resilient people.
6. What was the author's purpose(s)in writing this book?
It was written to show the hardships people faced when moving to another part of the country that no one has ever been to and the resilience people have in order to become what they want
13. What lesson did you learn?
I learned to not judge a book by its cover though that is completely cliche, though it is true. Shane was a man who randomly showed up to their home wearing all black and only saying a few words. He seemed more like a murder rather than a man who would save this family's life and everyone around them.
17. Compare two of the characters in this book.
Joe Starrett and Shane are very similar and different in several ways. One they both want what is good for the people they care for and will do anything to protect what they call family. Different in the sense that Shane is more logical with his actions whereas Joe is more emotional
