Sparkle | 22 comments When will we start the first monthly read?

message 3: by Olivia (new)

Olivia McCloskey (brewingupbooks) | 2470 comments Mod
The first monthly read will begin in February.

Olivia McCloskey (brewingupbooks) | 2470 comments Mod
We start them on Sunday. A moderator will create the discussion topic, but members can voice their opinions within it.

Yes, moderators are the only ones who can issue bans. A member who has received a ban will receive a PM from a moderator, explaining why they have received the ban.

Sophie wrote: "How often are author Q&A's held?"

They are held whenever we can arrange for an author to join the group and participate in one.

Amelia wrote: "When do monthly read discussions begin?"

They begin on the first Sunday of every month.

Noel wrote: "I read the rules but I'm still sorta confused. What's a warning?"

A warning is, simply, a short reminder of the group rules when you have broken one. Three warnings will result in a ban.

What is the staff messages thread for?

It is an area for any staff members, or moderators, to post short announcements or reminders. It is recommended that all members check this thread approximately once a week.

Abbie wrote: "How are new mods selected?"

The current moderators will select a member from the group who has been consistently active, aided other group members, and abided by the group rules.

Harriet wrote: "When/how often are new mods added?"

We don't have a specific frequency in which we promote a member to the position of moderator. Our group is only approximately 2 weeks old, so we probably won't be selecting anyone as another moderator for a few weeks.

message 9: by Charleen (new)

Charleen | 57 comments Do we have to ask to become a moderator, or do you pick people and ask them if they want to become a mod? Thanks!

Everyone is more than welcome to comment in book discussion threads.

Sparkle | 22 comments When will the next monthly/weekly read take place?

Sparkle wrote: "When will the next monthly/weekly read take place?"

I apologize for the delay (and the obvious lack of weekly/monthly reads). The next monthly read will be in June. A weekly read will occur next week, 5/12. These were just posted in the "Sign-Ups" folder.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Can we have a thread for our writing/poetry?

message 14: by Olivia (new)

Ismene wrote: "What do you have to do to participate in a weekly/monthly read?"

You are only obligated to read the assigned chapters if you wish to participate in the discussion.

Kyle~Special K~Rebel Leader~ wrote: "Can we have a thread for our writing/poetry?"

I've just created a folder to that effect.

Krishna wrote: "How many mods are there?"

There are currently three mods: myself, Kathy, and Mpiggy

Gienna wrote: "Will the group ever be down for maintenance?"

I cannot see this occurring in the foreseeable future, unless Goodreads as a whole is down for maintenance.

message 17: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 239 comments Will the next monthly read occur in August?

message 18: by Olivia (new)

Olivia McCloskey (brewingupbooks) | 2470 comments Mod
Yes, the moderators are currently selecting the August Monthly Read, which should be announced shortly.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Is there ever anything posted in the "events" section?

message 20: by Olivia (new)

Olivia McCloskey (brewingupbooks) | 2470 comments Mod
Ian wrote: "Is there ever anything posted in the "events" section?"

No, not typically. Because the group does not meet in real life, as some groups do, there really is no need to create events.

Christin wrote: "Are the moderator interviews over? If so, when will you be holding interviews again?"

Yes, the moderator interviews ended last Friday. We won't be holding any more interviews for quite a while, as we will be selecting 1-2 of the candidates to be promoted to moderator positions.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

What is the difference between the monthly reads and the weekly reads?

message 22: by Olivia (new)

Olivia McCloskey (brewingupbooks) | 2470 comments Mod
Monthly and Weekly Reads are very similar in multiple respects. For both Monthly and Weekly Reads, the entire group reads a single book and participates in discussions regarding that particular book. A Monthly Read is a book that is selected to be read during a single month. Weekly Reads, on the other hand, are books that are read in a single week.

message 23: by Sparkle (new)

Sparkle | 22 comments I noticed that you've made a few changes to the Monthly/Weekly Reads. When will these changes be put into effect?

message 24: by Olivia (new)

Olivia McCloskey (brewingupbooks) | 2470 comments Mod
The changes to our Monthly and Weekly Reads will be put into effect on September 1st.

message 25: by Savannah (new)

Savannah | 3 comments So I'm new to goodreads and I wanted to join your group. I introduced myself in the get to know everyone thread but I'm a little confused as to how to officially join the group. Like I said I'm new to all of this but i am really excited to get started.

message 26: by Savannah (new)

Savannah | 3 comments Umm scratch that question. I figured it out. Had to hit the refresh button . . .

message 27: by Amber (new)

Amber (starynight) Is there a monthly read for November?

message 28: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 239 comments This is our first time holding the Race to Read. We're using this Race to Read as an experiment to determine if we will be continuing it in the future. If it is well-recepted and quite a few members participate, then we will consider holding it on an annual basis.

I notice that some threads and challenges are missing and that there are a lot of new ones, do you know why that is?

message 30: by Olivia (last edited Feb 10, 2014 04:04PM) (new)

Olivia McCloskey (brewingupbooks) | 2470 comments Mod
Goodreads was experiencing some sort of bug which resulted in deleted comments throughout the group, so that may explain the missing threads and challenges. If there are any that you would like us to recreate, feel free to let us know. I'm not sure how to explain all of the new threads that have popped recently - maybe an increase in member participation? I hope this answers your question. If not, let me know!

Thank you for understanding. And I'll start working with the other moderators to see if we can get the Around the World in 80 Books challenge back up and running in the next few days. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

You're welcome:) You may also want to check to see if the bug problem effected the goodreads mobile app as well.

Good idea - I'll be sure to look into that. Thanks!
