Barely Breathing
question
Carol & George

I've spent so much of the book trying to figure out why the level of animosity between her Emma and her aunts and uncle so that they will abuse her. I don't understand it. Emma said that it's because of her unexpected arrival to their family. But is that enough reason for Carol to treat her that way? And seriously, George must be delusional not see what Carol is doing. I feel that there is something deeper with the George and Emma's father's story to make him not care about Emma that much. Does anyone else feel that way? Or can you understand what motivates Carol to abuse her so? Is she just psycho??
I'm hoping we find out more about carol/george/emma situation in book 3. It seems to me that it needs a bit more closure. I've kinda reasoned in my head that maybe Carol could have had a thing for Emma's dad and when rejected put her hooks into George instead. I really need a solid reason for the amount of anomisity she had towards Emma. As for George and his sweep everything under the rug attitude, that almost seems to come from the grandmother. Just like she didn't want to acknowledge Emma's exsistance because she was born out of wedlock.
I think there is a great deal of mental problems Carol has. First, the unexpectedness is a copout. I think it more has to do with the money she didn't get from George's parents. And George is just a jerk who doesn't want to think anything but good things about his wife, which can only be understood to a certain point.
but YES SHE IS PSYCHO.
but YES SHE IS PSYCHO.
I think that George just wants to have a happy family and by ignoring what Carol is doing he is avoiding confrontation. Carol is PSYCHO. Plain and simple. She wants someone to take her anger out on and since she doesn't consider Emma family, she gets the abuse. I also think that when she accuses Emma of doing things she never did, Carol is talking about what she did when she was younger and is jelous of Emma
she was such a psycho and it was really sad how George was blind to it all like he really didn't want to admit what was really going on.
I was a little confused by that too. If you are an abusive person/parent wouldn't you be abusive to all of your children or all of the children in the house? I didn't understand why all of her abuse was directed at Emma. I also don't understand why George chose to ignore it but that is common in those situations. Obviously, Carol was psychotic but why would her psychosis only involve Emma that is my question?
That confused me also and I wish the author had gone into a little bit more detail on why Carol was the way she was. I guess she was just crazy...
