I had not seen that article before. Bujold does a great job of making this religion very "real", very much a daily part of people's lives.
I agree. It almost seems as if their religion permeates their lives so much that they do not even have to consciously think of it to make it a major part of their lives, it just is.... (does that make any sense?)

I just finished reading the scene where Orico uses the crow to determine the validity of an accusation against Caz.
I find the scene to be a very interesting one -- as well as the subsequent conversation with Umegat.
Actually, all of the conversations with Umegat are fascinating! LOL
(edited to add spoiler warning)

Ouch. I am far way behind you :( still in Provincara's home; Palli had just arrived.
I would agree with you, that people of Chalion live their religion.

no worries! we still have plenty of time. I am probably jumping the gun, but for me I forget all the things I want to talk about if I wait!
What about a piece of paper between the respective pages, whenever you find a discussable issue? When you finish the book and go back to those parts, your thoughts will come back to you, no doubt.
I really like the concept of the Bastard as the "thumb" of the five fingers - the odd one of the quintet, but also the balancing one. As the thumb, the bastard brings something that the other four can't.

I agree that the Bastard brings us something. The idea of the seasons/family is not new and has historical roots: the Bastard makes it more like a living belief system.
Why does Caz refers to "Bastard's legendary hell, with it's all supposed torments"? Does Bastard has only a hell, for those who he claims? And what happens to his dedicates, acolytes and saints? It does not seem right. The five gods do not claim souls according to their virtue or the lack of it. They have other criteria for claiming souls. Should we understand that there are five "heavens" and five "hells" in the realm of five gods?
I haven't had a chance to do much research on this idea, but I keep thinking about chakras and the gods of Chalion.
each god corresponds to a different point on the body, as do chakras.
each is associated with a color or colors.
the gods all don't correspond with a particular chakra though....

Another thought that popped into my head was in relation to the different aspects of God (or the Goddess). Father and Son (Mother and Daughter)

probably both these ideas are way off in left field somewhere, but my brain is always trying to make connections and links between things.....
