Dare was lying on his bed, his eyes locked blankly on the light above him. His hands were tucked under his head and curled into tight fists. Like always, he was angry, very angry. He was angry because he couldn't remember his life before arriving in the penitentiary, he was angry because he was stuck there in general, and he was angry because he knew above the cell door the little plaque likely read, "Darius".

Dare frowned at the door, the girls voice interrupting his silent fuming. He sat up, stretching, taking his sweet time in approaching the door. He zipped his jumpsuit up all the way, having had it undone for while he relaxed. He opened the door, staring blankly at Oswin.

Dare sighed, following her, wondering why he even bothered.

Dare arrived back at his cell, curling and uncurling his fingers. He slammed the metal door shut, gritting his teeth. He hated it here so much. He hated everyone in the damned building. As if in defeat, he slumped down onto his uncomfortable bed, staring up at the ceiling once again.

Dare worried. He hated to admit it, but he did. He worried about Oswin, knowing how awful the time in the laboratory was. Also, he worried that he would never know what his own Z was. Every time he himself was experimented on, his brain was wiped again. Not a long lasting wipe, just enough so that he didn't remember the majority of what they did to him in the lab. It was so frustrating to know more about the people around him than what he knew of himself. All he knew was he was Darius Dorian, the kid with the ridiculous name and an unknown Z.

Dare let out a frustrated huff of air and got to his feet. He couldn't take being in the cell anymore. He shoved the door open and headed in the direction of the courtyard.

Dare looked away from the ceiling, frowning. He'd only been back from the courtyard for five minutes. He made his way to the door and slid it open. "Oswin?"

Dare's eyes widened and he stiffened. He had no idea how to comfort someone. Hesitantly, he wrapped his arms around her, running one of his hands over her soft hair. "Uh, you wanna talk about it?"

Dare was frozen for another second, still unsure of what the hell he was supposed to do in this kind of situation. Lord, was he this socially inept before he came to the penitentiary? "Oh, uh, yeah of course. It's fine... yeah, come in," he said, awkwardly gesturing for Oswin to enter.

Dare's eyes widened a fraction and he was sure he'd lost some color in his face, but that was as extreme as his reaction got. He was so used to remaining composed that he couldn't stop himself from constantly stifling his emotions and reactions. "Holy... are you okay?" He rolled his eyes. "Sorry, stupid question." He leaned against the wall.

Dare's eyes widened even more at her fresh tears and he strode forward and then came to an abrupt halt a foot or two from the bed. His hands were raised mechanically as if he were going to embrace her again. "It's okay," he said feebly, wanting to hit himself. He sat down next to her and reached out toward her. "It's not, but let's pretend it is okay, okay?"

Fenestra | 49 comments James and Ardent were wandering the halls, hand-in-hand, looking for Oswin. They had heard Kara crying and had wanted to know what had caused it (lest the better course of action be to avoid the redhead), but then they had heard Oswin. And they both felt terrible. They hadn't been experimented on yet this week, and if Oswin's cries were any indication, the doctors were in a crappy mood.
"Ozzy..." Jack knocked on the doorframe of the cell.
"Group hugs are better for cheering friends up..." Arden languidly walked out from behind him.
"Therefore, we can only conclude--"
"--that we should be allowed in for aforementioned group hug."

Dare tensed a little at the sight of the twins. Good lord, he thought to himself, more people I don't know how to deal with. "Uh, come in," he muttered, knowing they would probably handle Oswin's sadness better than he could.

Fenestra | 49 comments Arden let go of Jack's hand opting instead to hug Oswin around the shoulders. She wasn't sure why her friend was trying not to cry-- it was healthy to do so, and she and her brother had often let tears flow in the privacy of their cells. "You don't have to stop crying..." She started. "It's better if you do. We all do it. It's not normal to act happy in this kind of situation..." Her voice quiet, as usual, a contrast to Jack's seemingly never-ending enthusiasm. Eyes landing on the other boy in the room, Ari nodded. "Sorry for barging in."

Don't talk to him. Jack hissed mentally.

Ari subtly rolled her eyes at her brother. S'not like he's hitting on me. Chill. We just invaded his cell.

Jack was still a bit uptight, but he nodded at her nonetheless, standing off to the side with his arms folded.

"It's... okay," Dare said slowly, noticing the protective stance Arden's brother had taken on. Dare was now standing, his hands shoved into his jumpsuit pockets, clearly uncomfortable with the situation.

Fenestra | 49 comments Stop it. Arden glared.

'M not doing anything.

You are. Quit trying to be a thug.

Jack's posture relaxed and his arms fell to his sides.

Dare noticed their strange, silent exchange, even more confused by them as he'd ever been. He'd never really spoken to the twins, seeing as he rarely spoke to anyone. Oswin was the only person who really bothered to barge into his antisocial life. "Is everything okay? I mean... I could go, you know, give you all some time alone..." he realized how ridiculous that would be, due to the fact they were all in his cell.

Dare groaned internally. This was what he got for being nice. He was being looped into one of Oswins inane plans, all because he couldn't help but attempt to comfort her. I'll just have to start being an asshole all the time, he thought to himself.

Fenestra | 49 comments "'Atta girl, Ozzy!" Jack clapped her gently on the back.

Arden made a face, "Will you stop with that ridiculous nickname? It'll never catch!"

message 20: by Fenestra (new)

Fenestra | 49 comments "Solid plan." Jack nodded, fingers linking with Arden's.

Arden smirked deviously. "Five bucks says Grant's with Crimson~"

As the other three filed out of his cell, Dare quickly slammed his cell door shut, smirking to himself. He'd had enough socializing for the day... or the month. He was not going to get tangled in their idiotic plans. A moment passed and Dare sighed, opening the door and hurrying after them. "Not going to get tangled up in idiotic plans my ass," he said under his breath.
