How do you feel about cursing/swearing/cussing?

I don't, and personally, I'm not a fan of it, but I guess I can't control people...

I curse sometimes online, not off. I don't really like it, but I don't mind. I don't think kids should curse.

.H99 wrote: "I don't think anyone should curse. There's no point, really."

They're just words that people decided to lable "bad", though.

I'll agree with H99 on this one.

Lo (darkalleycookies) | 563 comments Mod
I used to not like it very much, but now that I'm around the age where everybody's having issues with bullying, parents, families, social problems, etc, I understand why people use it. Sometimes you just need a word stronger than "crap" or "butthead" to express how you feel. I'm not saying you should cuss in every conversation just to be cool, but say them when you need to, and don't overdo it. If you're not comfortable don't.

And also, this is a bit odd, but my favorite type of songs are the ones with emotional lyrics, as well as books. And it sort of irritates me when they censor the lyrics and blunt the emotion of the song. It's like cutting off how somebody expresses themselves, or limiting creativity.

Leah (lepolk) | 3478 comments Mod
Yeah, like when it's a game of "how many times can I cuss in a sentence."

message 10: by Lo, I'm a waste of time (new)

Lo (darkalleycookies) | 563 comments Mod
Yeah, that doesn't make sense. It't not hard to use real words.

♥Booknerdswift♥ H99 wrote: "I don't think anyone should curse. There's no point, really."

i agree. everyday, at school, i'm surronded by people who are cursing, even my best friends do it, and i thought that they'd never do it! even my ex-bff does it.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Sometimes you need strong emotion to make your point. So I swear sometimes. Also my fav rapper is EMINEM and listen uncensored song.I think you know what I mean.

I'm not so into rap, but that's getting off topic. I don't especially like the way rappers use cuss words, since they're mostly for horny uses, though I completely respect their ideals. I just don't like that type of music.

message 14: by Michaelhoctor (new)

Michaelhoctor | 59 comments They're just words, In my opinion. Words that mean "bad" things are O.K. However, the innapropriate ones should still be not allowed in obvious places (School, workplaces where children are present.)
However, OFFENSIVE "bad" words, are bad. So in short - Bad words aren't bad as long as they aren't offensive/used around small children if they're innapropriate.

★RavenclawReader★ (stargazer101) | 36 comments I, personally, don't swear, although almost everybody I know does. Aren't there other ways to release anger, people? For me, when I'm mad and/or frustrated, I either read a book or write. Of course, like what Michaelhoctor said, some swear words are also offensive. Those should DEFINITELY not be used regularly, or at all.

message 16: by Flora (new)

Flora (shipitlikefedex) I'm neutral, I don't curse online, unless really angered which hasn't happen yet. :)

message 17: by Kathy ♡ (new)

Kathy ♡ (dattebayooo) | 73 comments Well, I don't really have anything against it, due to the fact that I cuss a lot....but sometimes it does get annoying and there are some people that cuss in everything they say...that annoys me so much! Plus a alot of people cuss in front of kids. For example: When I was in Target, me and my friends overheard someone say this on the phone: D***!! I'm gonna get home and whoop her a**!! (He was saying it in the WRONG and DIRTY way...) I mean really?? Say that somewhere else!! There are KIDS around you!!

message 21: by Sierra (new)

Sierra (skippingstones4) I don't usually curse unless I'm really super mad. And my parents and friends do it but I don't take offense to it or anything.

I just find the whole concept of cursing kind of...wierd. It's on my list of one of the things I've always wondered about. I mean who decided which words get to be curse words and which ones don't? You know?

message 22: by T.J. (new)

T.J. My brother and I use different things like, "That mother trucker," or "he's a dastard" which actually means malicious coward. But people still stare at us as if we've cursed. It's pretty funny.

But anyways, I don't think some people should cuss so much. Sometimes I think it's only because they want to look cool. I cuss only sometimes, when I'm really mad. Ad it's not at people usually.

My band director, when someone curses, always says (refering to herself) "Little ears", so when ever my friends curse, I say "little ears" 'cause my director is someone who you talk about and when you turn the cornor, there she is. Not what you need when planning a gift for her birthday!! :)

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Because it kind of refers to little kids who have little ears and they should not hear language like that.

Mrs.Crazy (nico di angelo) | 4116 comments Mod
I read that people who talk to themselves usually have higher IQs than people who don't.

Lol. I didn't mean to put that here. :D wrong topic!

message 36: by Annie (new)

Annie (litisfire) Oh gosh. Parents hate it, teens use it, and it's used to insult people.

Personally, I don't curse, and when I do, it's very rare, and usually involves saying, "Crap!" Or something mild. Nothing like, "You f-in r______! Why don't you just go f-- in h-! Now go move your a- away from here! You n- are full of s- that even your own f-in mom don't want you!" (That's pretty a pathetic example, but then again, I don't know how people spit out the curse words. Heh.)

But even though I don't curse, it doesn't mean society shouldn't. I'm not exactly against it, but I'm more against curse words than for curse words. Partially because curse words are meant to express yourselves. It's not always the cleanest use of words, but you understand what the message is. Like, why have them if society wants to turn their backs on it? It's meant to allow you to speak. And most often in angry hate. But sometimes used in dirty talk, too. Who knows? Sometimes when an accident happens, you just can't help but say, "Sh--!" You know? So don't be hating on curse words. :)

Like, I don't want kids saying it until they're like, twenty five or something, but we need to acknowledge it, because ignoring it won't make it go away. It's just a word. So yeah...

I have no problem with it, so long as you are offending no one. If it's just an expression of your anger (or another emotion) then I think it's just the same as any other word. If when something bad happened I always said: PICKLES! then would people be averted to me saying pickles? And if me saying pickles made my friend uncomfortable, would that make it wrong too? (Feel free to insert any name where you see pickles)

Yeah, I read about something like that in Point of Retreat, but they used the word butterfly. A girl was at a talent show insulting people by calling them her curse word, butterfly, and the teachers were okay, but once she said d*mn the teachers were jumping out their seats.

I think that you really feel ashamed because of the way you yelled at her, not really because of your word choice. I could be wrong though.

message 41: by Dion, Keep calm and debate your topic (new)

Dion (my_booklove) | 446 comments Mod
I've never read point of retreat, but it's a good example of what I'm saying. If the word is used to offend someone then it's rude and it doesn't matter the meaning, but if curse words aren't directly offending someone, then I don't see a problem with it. I think it's become slightly taboo, because they think that it's rude, but the fact that we're not allowed to say them, makes them more appealing to the people who will misuse them.

message 42: by Ella (new)

Ella (AWholeLotofNothing) | 386 comments I know this has been a dead debate for a while....

I curse. Often. I'm not proud of it, but I will have to say, I don't do it because it sounds cool. The difference about swear words and normal words is that they DO have more power than other words. While normal words are stored in the left side of the brain with the linguistics, swear words are stored and accessed in the right side of the brain, along with emotions. Studies have shown that people can withstand more pain when they swear. So, I believe (in contrast to my mother's beliefs) that if you are hurt, or angry, go ahead and swear. It's not the words you use. It's the intent and context you use. Then their are words that slander a particular minority group, and I dont think those should be used at all.

I once watched something on that. (or heard about it, or some other thing that I can't remember what it was now (irrelevant, really)... But I remember the content, which was relevant.) They had people stick their hands in ice water for as long as they could. If they swore, they could withstand the pain for much longer.

message 44: by Jake (new)

Jake | 92 comments I've never actually met anyone older than 30 who cared an inkling about swearing. I don't really think it matters, just don't take it to Call of Duty multiplayer levels.

Ella (AWholeLotofNothing) | 386 comments @H99
I dont think parents should punish children for swearing (because a lot of times, that just encourages them to do it more), but should teach them to simply use it in non-offensive context. But that's just my opinion. I'm not a parent.

There's a story about me as a kid--

I ran up to my mum going: "mummy mummy mummy" and then I said "shit!"
and she said: "Chloe! What does that word mean?"
and I said: "I don't know, it's what daddy says when a fish dies!"

(For those of you who didn't get that, a fish had died)

Me, as an impressionable young child, heard my dad using the word and didn't understand the connotations, only that it's what someone said in a certain situation. Therefore, I have no qualms about swearing, except that there are certain situations that are unacceptable to swear in, and I think that's ok. I don't know - feel free to contradict me.

My parents' first language isn't English, and I'm not exactly fantastic in their first language, so I don't know if they're swearing at me or not. It's actually the children in the family who don't swear because we don't want out parents picking up on it, not the other way around.
