Does anyone know. . .Is there anywhere besides the Barnes and Noble website to get free nook books?

no but I'm told you can download for kindle, copy to your computer, format with calibre and transfer to your nook
Have you checked your local library? Our library has a pretty good selection of free books that I can download to my Nook.
There are some groups on Facebook that offer free downloads … mostly for Kindle, but some for Nook. Poison Pen Press offers several of there's for 99¢ on Nook. Good luck!
I'm pretty sure that the Nook format is more universal than the Kindle one. My understanding is that any ePub book should open on the Nook. Also, Denise is correct. You should be able to reformat a Kindle book for the Nook. I think there are several programs that will do that. I have to say, once I went to an e-book format, I was hooked! I now have a little Android tablet with a Nook app and read all my books AND do all my email there.
