This is for the discussion of the early pictograms, or petroglyphs.

I got curious about this the other day, in particular the "Indus Valley Text". There are images of this at

In Dehaene's "Reading in the brain", he shows the development of more modern characters from earlier pictograms. He is a neuroscientist, not a linguist, so his viewpoint is coloured by how the brain identifies images from small artefacts that resemble the pictograms.
