I have been searching quite some time for the exact same thing. I have not found anything, at least from the current era. I have recently been reading Color in Contemporary Painting, by Charles LeClair. C. 1997. He discusses how color and composition are used in dozens of paintings. So it references other paintings, it's not at all a "how to." But I'd love to know if you get a good recommendation specifically on composition.

Many years ago when I was first learning to paint, I read a book called "Composition" by David Friend. As far as I can remember, it was great! Another helpful book is "Carlsons guide to landscape painting" by John Carlson. It deals with landscape painting but talks a lot about composition. I pass this one on to all my students.

I like to recommend an art catalog from an author I know personally. Frances Tyler worked at the National Gallery of Art. She has developed a catalog of Romanian modern art from her husband, Geoffrey Tyler‘s collection. These exquisite paintings and sculptures are now housed in the University of Tasmania, Australia. I have enjoyed these lovely pictures and I hope you all will follow her page and leave reviews. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7...
