I think before, he didn't destroy it because he was too wrapped up in his deathly hallows thoughts, but later, perhaps he wanted to do further research on it? Sometimes I wonder if the story were told from a different point of view altogether, whether Dumbledore would still seem like the good guy.
Sorry, I didn't mean to post when I did. Anyway, I don't think Dumbledore even considered destroying the wand and we have nothing but the film which tells us that it can be destroyed. Also it may be a bit like the One Ring in that aspect- although Frodo knew he had to, he couldn't quite force himself to do it.
