Ashley Rights Around the World Challenge
Duration: February 1 - February 28,2013

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) is a multilateral treaty adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 16, 1966, and in force from March 23, 1976. It commits its parties to respect the civil and political rights of individuals, including the right to life, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, electoral rights and rights to due process and a fair trial. As of March 2012, the Covenant had 74 signatories and 167 parties.

**Paragraph taken from Wikipedia. International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

The challenge for this month will consist of reading books from the countries who have signed and ratified the Covenant. Using the site above, make a goal of how many books you'd like to read for the month from the 74 countries. (74 countries are the ones in the column "Date Signed".)

*You can only use a country ONE time.

Ex: I choose to read 5 books OR just see how many countries you can get crossed off for the month.

Morgan | 127 comments I wont set a number for this one, I'll just see how many I can do :)

message 3: by Ashley (new)

Ashley We are needing a leader for this challenge if anyone would like to do it. :)

message 4: by Heather (new)

Heather | 125 comments I am with Morgan, I am not going to set a specific goal, I am just going to see how many I can do. As far as needing a leader, what does being a leader entail? I only joined a week and a half ago, but am looking to get more involved.

message 5: by Kattibrie (new)

Kattibrie | 96 comments Do the books have to be set in these countries or just written by authors from them?

Cinder (Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer

Kattibrie | 96 comments Kai, so far no one has answered my question - Do the books have to be set in these countries or just written by authors from them?

message 13: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Kattibrie, to keep it open, let's say either. Either the author must be from that country or the book must be set in that country. The challenge is only a month long, so that seems fair. (Initially, we had intended it as a mini around the world challenge, but that might be better suited to a yearly challenge.)

message 14: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) | 751 comments I'm in, but no goal :)

message 15: by Kattibrie (last edited Feb 28, 2013 10:42PM) (new)

Kattibrie | 96 comments Ok, Great Kara, thanks! :) I'm gonna go with 5 then.

I already have:
2/5

1.USA - The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald - finished 01.02, 3.5/5
2.Germany - Portuguese Irregular Verbs by Alexander McCall Smith - finished 02.02, 4/5

Actually the second book had a lot of other places in it but since we could use only one...

message 16: by Naomi (new)

Naomi Terpening I like the idea of not setting a goal for this one. Count me in!

message 17: by Jack (last edited Feb 02, 2013 02:32PM) (new)

Jack (jack_) Ooh I like this challenge. I'll just see how many I can do. Thats a lot of countries so it shouldn't be too hard. ;-)

message 18: by Jack (new)

Jack (jack_) 1. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - Girl, Missing by Sophie McKenzie

message 19: by Heather (new)

Heather | 125 comments Since the United States is one, I guess I have already completed 1/Infinity as I read Beloved. :-)

message 29: by Kai (new)

Kai (uchinaguchi) Congratulations to everyone on this challenge! With the short month, and what I would consider a fairly difficult challenge, I think that all of us did awesome! And from what it sounds like many of us were on our final book for this challenge, and just unable to complete it in time.

Good luck on your challenges next month and for the rest of the year!
