From a Goodreads reviewer:
Edison McDaniels is a surgeon and a talented, brave writer. His book describes the terrible conditions that surrounded the wounded, the surgeons, the embalmers, and the dead at Gettysburg. This story is not for the fainthearted; McDaniels bombards the reader with vivid details of wounds, procedures, and the overwhelming task of caring for soldiers. He trusts that you have come into his world to experience reality and to live in that world long enough to have your sense of history deepened.
The immense suffering and loss is underscored by two enemy soldiers lying on the field unnoticed, bonding in ways that demonstrate the strength of the human spirit and, at the same time, how inconsequential they were to the totality of the struggle.
Jupiter Jones is a talented embalmer, an artist who respects his clients and works to return them to a world outside the war zone with dignity. The exhausted surgeons do their work without the knowledge of sterile conditions and time for aftercare.
If you want to understand the Civil War, this book provides necessary insight.

Summary:
In the summer of 1863, General Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia advanced into Pennsylvania in a daring offensive to win the Civil War in a single campaign. They met the Union Army at a quiet crossroads town called Gettysburg, and engaged in the greatest battle ever fought on American soil. Three days of combat ended on July 3 with Pickett's Charge, a heroic assault by nine of Lee's brigades against the Union defenses on Cemetery Ridge. Their repulse at the stone wall became known as the "high-water mark" of the Confederacy. At the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery that November, Lincoln used the occasion to deliver his Gettysburg Address, a short, two-minute speech that became the most famous in American history.
In this original retelling of the Gettysburg story, Iain C. Martin draws upon firsthand accounts—from the generals to the lowly privates and civilians caught in the epic struggle. Readers will discover history through the experiences of two Gettysburg teenagers—Matilda "Tillie" Pierce and Daniel Skelly. Featuring the artwork of Don Troiani, original photos, full-color maps, interesting tales, and trivia, Gettysburg gives young readers a fascinating look into this great turning point of American history—and just in time for the 150th anniversary of the epic battle.
Reviews:
“This title is a good one to incorporate into your library for the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.” (Jeanne Martin, Ingram Library Services)
“The author... offers a cogent, carefully researched view of the battle and its significance in both the short and long terms.” (Kirkus Reviews)
A thorough, engaging and generously illustrated account of the battle of Gettysburg. Quotes from participants and eyewitnesses create a 'you-are-there' quality as the narrative builds through the terrible summer days of July, 1863. Biographies, glossary and a postscript provide additional details on the heroes of Gettysburg."
(Janis Herbert, author of The Civil War for Kids)
“Iain Martin has produced one of the best introductory books on the battle of Gettysburg for young readers. Readers gain a solid understanding of Gettysburg in easy-to-comprehend prose, accentuated with excellent use of appropriate maps and illustrations. A fine contribution to the education of the next generation of Civil War buffs!"
(Scott Mingus, Author of Flames Beyond Gettysburg)
“Gettysburg: The True Account of Two Young Heroes in the Greatest Battle of the Civil War is a good source for students doing research on the Battle of Gettysburg or for students who are interested in Civil War history. The insertion of quotes from letters and diaries brings history to life and plants the reader in the middle of the action. Although the title indicates that the emphasis is on the stories of two young citizens of Gettysburg, the book is much more than that. It includes detailed descriptions of battles, biographies of military leaders and civilians, photographs and illustrations, and a glossary of terms. Gettysburg will keep the reader's interest from the first salvo to the final reunion of aging veterans.” (Sherry Garland, author of Voices of Gettysburg)

I written a new book entitled: Invaders in Our Town: The Story of the Battle of Gettysburg Through the Eyes of Some Who Lived It.
My book is about some of the civilians who endured the battle. I wrote it as an historical fiction work, where the primary characters are all actual people, and I build the story upon actual events that occurred to these people from June up to July 3rd (the final day of the battle). I included several fictional characters to add drama to the story.
It is written using a significant amount of conversation between the characters, with the events the lived, and the battle, as the backdrop, which allows these people to come alive. In this way you really get to know them and not just explore them from a distance. It is a fun read.
If you are interested, feel free to check out my website devoted to this new book at www.invadersinourtown.com.
I would also love to have a review in the event you decide to order and read it.
Thanks and I hope you take a look at the website and the book.
