hi jack i just joined like 2 hours ago and i was just wanted to know things about you where do you live whats your fav. movie or your fav. song?
Hi Amara,
Well, I live in Dublin, Ireland. I have a lot of favourite books but at the moment I'm loving the Gone series by Michael Grant and Coraline by Neil Gaiman and, oh, The Hundred Year Old Man.....blah. I'm a fan of Pink, and The Coronas are my favourite band. My musical tastes are open to anything really and I enjoy all genres. I have a lot of films that I could call my favourite so I can't choose.
How about you?
Thanks,
Jack

I love all kinds of music too. Classical is one of my favourites, but I also like alternative, jazz, blues, pop, rock and r&b.
Are we a Cat or Dog group. I am fine with either, but I would like to nominate The American Black Footed Ferret as our pet.

ah so cute..
Hi, I'm new and I'm trying to figure out how nominations and polling work. It looks like In The Devil's Own Words is an April group read, but I didn't see it in the nominations thread or in the poll. And the description of the book alone has so many errors...
Jack wrote: "Have any questions about the group? Feel free to ask."Hi Jack,
I am confused about what the difference is between a Buddy Read and a Group Monthly read.
Our monthly group reads are nominated and voted or by everyone in the group. It as its own thread and two threads fr discussion. Our buddy reads are books that someone wants to read but discuss with other members of the group. It doesn't have to be voted on, just suggested. There is one thread for buddy reads discussions. Our monthly group reads are our main reads and the buddy reads are smaller and are for members who want to read a and discuss a book with a buddy/s.
Hope that helps

No problem. Wen we started out the buddy reads were for pairs only, but more people wanted to join in so I just made it so that anyone can join in with a buddy read.

Never mind. I should've read the thread. Sorry.

Hello Jack. I have a question regarding the posting of books for the Every Year Challenge. When I view my entry of books already read, it shows 10 covers. Should a book automatically show up there if I check the shelf name I have chosen for my challenge books? I have at least 3 that I posted in the comment boxes below, just so I do not lose track of which books I am using, but they will not show up on the view of books read for the challenge. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance, for your help. I am new to the group, but I love what I am seeing.
I'm sorry Laurel, but I don't know what's wrong. I have no control over how the challenges work. You are going t have to contact the goodreads team in the Feedback group or email.
Hi Jack, and everyone else! I neglected to introduce myself. I am new to the group. I live near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I am a retired school teacher, and relatively new to Goodreads-started in January. I love mysteries, historical fiction, and nonfiction, especially relating to the American Civil War, World War 2, and Old Hollywood. I am a dog person, and love to garden, do scrapbooking, and am newly addicted to my new Ipad. Thank you for all the work you do. I really like the challenges that you have set up.
Welcome Laurel. I just joined goodreads in January too, and also addicted to my new ipad! Thanks for the kind words. :)
Laurel wrote: "Hello Jack. I have a question regarding the posting of books for the Every Year Challenge. When I view my entry of books already read, it shows 10 covers. Denisa wrote: "Laurel wrote: "Hello Jack. I have a question regarding the posting of books for the Every Year Challenge. When I view my entry of books already read, it shows 10 covers. I will try that, but it should be ok, since these are books already listed on the main all year challenge that is now up on my profile or home page. I have read all of them this year, since I just joined GR in Jan. I will go back and double check though.

Laurel wrote: "Hello Jack. I have a question regarding the posting of books for the Every Year Challenge. When I view my entry of books already read, it shows 10 covers. You need to move them into your to read shelf and cross reference to your challenge shelf, and then pretend you are currently reading them. I.e. change where you are in the book a few times. I only joined in March and had read a few books before hand that should have been included in my yearly challenge, but I had marked them as already read.
It may seem like cheating but it's the only way I could see to make my books count for the challenges.
And everyone, I'm not cheating. I was so excited finding goodreads I started to put up all my read books first
Hi Katherine. Thanks for the advice. I think you found an alternative way to input your books. Denisa suggested I needed to make sure that the read dates were re-entered. I put the date in again for each date, and the books showed up on the Challenge View page. So everything seems to be ok. I am counting my books that I have read since Jan.1st, since that's when I started Goodreads. I agree with you, I do not think it is cheating. I appreciate your help. Looking for another friend? I tthink you being kind enough to offer help suggests that we could be friends, if you like. Check out my profile, if you like. I belong to 2 other groups, Book Buying Addicts Anonymous, which is a really fun group, and a World War 2 History group. Love mysteries, historical fiction and history. Thanks again.
I started my challenges in March and even tho I was tracking my reading from the first of the year, I'm not counting anything from before March. I know I should count the Jan-Feb-midMarch books, if nothing else, to make things easier on myself.
But I'm seriously trying to challenge myself! (think I'm on a good path for that!)

Haven't sussed out yet how to send a friend request but will do before the week is out.
I have the same issue on my KF. The app is just fine for updating my progress, but for the more in-depth message board stuff we do, I need a read keyboard! :)
Kat wrote: "I have the same issue on my KF. The app is just fine for updating my progress, but for the more in-depth message board stuff we do, I need a read keyboard! :)"I can't imagine not having a keyboard here on this site.. course I am old school too..
I have a nexus 7 and don't have a keyboard. I think I need one because I tend to make a lot of typo use the keyboard on the screen.
Kat wrote: "Auto-correct stinks!"Kat I know I have received some strange texts from people and some made me laugh and some made me go "WHAT?" and delete it fast
Auto correct might be a pain, but I LOVE my Google Chrome spell checker! I don't have a lot of problems with spelling but it saves me whenever I do!
Reading a few books lately where someone has left things to the spell checker and even though the spelling is correct, it isn't the proper word in the context of that sentence. (There, Their) Spell checker doesn't do everything
Hey Jack I've got a question :) How are you planning on approaching buddy reads for next month? I remember reading that you were going to change things around a bit, so that we have 2 main book reads, is that right? Can we still nominate buddy reads or will we have a designated thread where we can arrange this ourselves?
There is a designated folder in the General thread where you can organise a buddy read with another member of the group.
Thanks jack that was just what I was looking for but didn't notice it there. I think I'll wait and see which books are chosen for next months read first. Are we still going to be working through the gone series as a buddy read each month?
If you'd like, since it was nominated, I can keep it going each month as an extra monthly read. It was already arranged.
I'd still quite like to work through the series, but it doesn't have to be set up as a monthly group thing. I guess it depends on how many others are still interested in reading this series at the moment. I like the idea of arranging individual buddy reads ourselves, as that way we can accommodate personal tastes more closely.
Usually, buddy reads are discussed by PM. Maybe we could have a series read feature, where we can read a whole series in a certain amount of time?
