james joyce's birthday is coming up on february 2nd - i thought, since things have been pretty quiet around here for a while, we might celebrate by postings some favorite passages, quotes, photos, or just stream of consciousness fun ...

I second that. Also I wonder if we could begin reading as a group the 'Restored Finnegans Wake'. Since the text has changed considerably in the new edition it is bound to offer newer challenges.

yeah, the "old" version was such light reading, hardly any challenges at all. ;)

did they finally get around to editing in the corrections and changes that joyce had earmarked? i hadn't heard. has anyone read the new edition???

I said 'newer'challenges. That's because McHugh's annotations will not be always compatible. The pagination has changed.
It's a genetic edition, like the Gabler Ulysses. The editors are Danis Rose and John O'Hanlon. It's from Penguin, took about 30 years. If Gabler's was heroic, this is nothing less than superhuman.

well, dang, i'm going to have to pick it up and dive in as soon as i finish what i'm reading now.

i'm a fan of the gabler text, one of my professors worked with him on the reconstruction. for a while i owned that photostat copy of the original, handwritten text and the first edition (of ulysses, that is) with joyce's hand written corrections. i saw a similiar version of FW floating around at one point, but i passed it by. i also have an early edition of FW in hardcover with numerous "corrections" inserted as an epilogue.

Friends, I am new to James Joyce and I want to start off with Ulysses. My eyesight is failing( not because of reading but obsessive internet browsing) and I would be thankful if you could suggest me an edition of Ulysses( hardcover or paperback) with a nice print, modest font-size, good binding and few errors( Ulysses' editions, I am told,have a reputation for typos and printer devils) that is less taxing for my eyes.
