Mother of Pearl

Question about the ending

SPOILERS....SPOILERS.....SPOILERS
First of all, let me say I LOVED this book. I have a question about the ending. Is it realistic to think that a white baby can be raised by a Negro couple in the Jim Crow South? I can't imagine that there wouldn't be a lot of questions as to where this child came from, why do you have it, is it legally adopted? I didn't even think about this when I finished the book, I was just so full of the wonderful experience of reading it that I didn't question anything. But as the days went by and I couldn't stop thinking about it, I began to think that Even and Joody having Pearl would be a BIG problem in 1961. Any thoughts?

I have to admit I had the same thoughts when I finished the book. Even if they didn't encounter legal troubles, I feel sure there was a small (hopefully) group that made life miserable for them. I did enjoy the book very much.
