Hello all. :)I stumbled into the Hollows quite by accident. In fact, I originally had an aversion to the books. I saw the hardbacks in the bargain sections of the big box bookstores and felt rather put off by the concept, particularly the cover of A Perfect Blood. I was not interested in reading about vampires, witches, and demons.
Then, for some reason, I picked up Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews on audio CD. I discovered that I did like urban fantasy subgenre after all. (My earlier dismissal came from too much Twilight hype, I think. Yes, I will bash Twilight. ;) )
I saw Pale Demon sitting on display at my local library and borrowed it. After ten minutes I hit the off button. The story seemed too interesting to start at book #9. I had made the mistake of starting in the middle or at the end of a series before. I didn’t want to do that with the Hollows.
Back to the library I went. I checked out the audiobook edition of Dead Witch Walking. I made it through the first chapter before I hit the stop button. The story sounded promising but the narrator was creating a tone that just pushed me away. I decided I had to read the book instead of listening to it.
On a business trip I came across a great used bookstore and picked up This Witch For Hire, a hardcover omnibus of books #1 and #2 that the Science Fiction Book Club published. (Book store plug – The Book Barn in Niantic, CT is awesome! It is now on my itinerary to visit whenever I am in the area.) I also managed to pick up The Good, The Bad, and the Undead in a pristine hardcover edition as a remainder at another big box store.
The first book was okay. The second book hooked me. I read the third in a day. Now I am working on the fourth (library book). I have hardcover copies of #2, #5-#9. I’m looking for hardcover copies of #1, #3, and #4.
I picked up a copy of Dead Witch Walking when it first came out in 2004, and I've been hooked ever since! Kim Harrison has created a kick-ass lead character in Rachel Morgan. She has gone through so many changes and struggles since book one. All of the characters have such depth, and I care about what happens to each one of them, even AL! I'd love to own all of the books in hardcover, and on audio someday. I'm currently reading Ever After, and I'm loving it! It will probably be later in the year before I pick up book one, but I look forward to revisiting the story. Thanks for creating this group and inviting me!
Sue, I've found that some books I prefer the printed version and some I prefer the audio version. I was underwhelmed by the first chapter Marguerite Gavin narrated in Dead Witch Walking. But then I wasn't too impressed by the beginning of the book, either. Maybe I should give Marguerite another chance and listen to the books again.

Love you all.
Have Fun.
