The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling by J.K. Rowling

A BIG NOVEL ABOUT A SMALL TOWN ...

When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils ... Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

Meaghan (meaghan2293) I'm excited to read this. I'm worried though, that I have different expectations for JK Rowling after my love of Harry Potter.

If anyone has an ereader, I have the book as an epub (which works on nook and ibooks, and can be converted for kindles).

Ashley (sprtychick10) I have a Nook.

Ashley (sprtychick10) anyone else finding this book having a slow start?

Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ (lindsaysingerofstories) YES!!!! Very slow start.

I had a hard time keeping the characters straight at first too but as the book goes along, you get to know them. I have almost 100 pages left and have no idea how the book is going to end.

message 7: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan (meaghan2293) I couldn't get into this book. I'm not going to stop trying, and will go back to it later, but for now I failed in terms of reading it for the February buddy read!

Ashley (sprtychick10) Has anyone else finished it?

Lindsay♫SingerOfStories♫ (lindsaysingerofstories) I admit it - I haven't finished it. I'm just not really into it so I sort of read a handful of pages and then find something ***OOOH, SHINY!!!!*** new to read.....(that's how it feels....)

message 10: by Jenn Engels (new)

Jenn Engels | 10 comments I finished it. I thought it was good, but not great. It took about half way through to book for me to be able to understand and keep track of all the characters. I also found it really hard to actually like any of them, and I felt most of them weren't fully developed until the last couple of chapters, if at all.

Basically I found the book to be just a commentary on class inequalities, but it suffered because the characters were hard to like and really relate to.

Has anyone read Mansfield Park by Jane Austen? It reminded me of that. Okay story, but you don't actually like any of the characters....

message 11: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1 comments I'm about 60% through it. It has definitely picked up, but it's slow going. I still be reading it into March.
