Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Since she'd been on the outside, she'd survived an Aether storm, she'd had a knife held to her throat, and she'd seen men murdered. This was worse.

Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland - known as The Death Shop - are slim. If the cannibals don't get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She's been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He's wild - a savage - and her only hope of staying alive.

A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile - everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria's help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must accept each other to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky.

Discuss Aria & Perry! What did you think of the book?

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Pretty decent dystopian read, pretty creative. Characters were a little flat for me, which is why I rated it 4 stars, but I really liked the plot :) I do plan on reading the sequel (hopefully soon!)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 60 comments I really liked this book but the sequel was soo much better (5 stars). And to think I wasn't going to read this because it looked like nothing more than a sappy romantic dystopian read! It was much more than that and any dystopia fans should read it! :)

Kath (FerKath) | 5 comments I started it this morning, and I'm already on Page 98, even though I'm working today. It's engrossing, and already I can feel myself developing a terrible crush on Perry. Let's see how it turns out. :)

Ooh cool! I liked the first book (the plot was really awesome), but didn't like the characters that much, but maybe I'll have to try the sequel after all!

Karen’s Library Overall I liked it and have the sequel on my TBR list. It wasn't my absolute favorite dystopian ever, but definitely decent.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Karen wrote: "Overall I liked it and have the sequel on my TBR list. It wasn't my absolute favorite dystopian ever, but definitely decent."

As usual, we're on the same page ;) I'm sure I'll read the sequel but I'm not in a hurry! Scarlet is almost here Karen!!

Kasie Wegener I had a hard time getting into the book at first however it did get better. The sequel is much, much better.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Oh really? Cool, something to look forward to then. You were quick to read it, it just came out in january, didn't it?

Kasie Wegener Yeah. I am just picking at random from my TBR pile.

Angela | 37 comments I love this book! I thought it was great dystopian, very unique and intriguing. Plus, I ♥♥♥ my wild man Perry!

Sydney she.her (bewberry) I'm still waiting for UPS to ship the book to my house! I want to read it, but it keeps getting delayed. *raises fist in frustration*
I'm hoping it's good, but if Aria is one of those "poor defenseless me" types that'll kill it for me.

OMG! If it downloads at midnight I'll be up late for sure!! Heheheh...

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Prodigy didn't download at midnight for me but it was ready the next morning! I was glad about that, it's better for sleep :)

Karen’s Library That's probably a really good thing then, David! I was up until 2 this morning finishing Shiver. I need some sleep tonight! :-). Tough Monday!

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Sleep well :)

Elodie | 3 comments I really liked the dystopian elements in this book. I also liked the romantic elements but somehow they didn't quite work together? You know? I don't have any desire to read the sequel as I am not sure how they would carry on the plot.

I know exactly what you mean, those were my exact feelings but I will try the sequel eventually just because I'm curious where it's all going :)

She's not. I mean, she ain't no Saba, but she's okay.

I liked this book very much. Are spoilers allowed in this discussion? I finished it yesterday and would love to explore some bits with fellow readers...

Pamela (waterspout) | 370 comments Kath- u can use the spolier tags <.spoiler>...<./spoiler> just remove the dots :)

Kath (FerKath) | 5 comments Thanks, Pamela! I'll do that. Now I need to think up a few spoilers... ;-)

Renuka | 18 comments Yeah I read this a while ago, but it really stuck in my head. I really thought the Aether was different from other dystopian novels. And I liked Perry and Aria too although Roar was my favorite character.

Cool, yeah I liked the aether too :) Have you read the Roar and Liv novella?

Karen’s Library The Roar and Liv novella? Hhmmm.... Where have I been? I'll have to check it out, David! Thanks!

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments You're welcome ;) I haven't read it but I plan to before I read the sequel :)

Karen’s Library I smell another buddy read one of these days!

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Karen wrote: "I smell another buddy read one of these days!"

Yes!!

message 28: by Mare (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mare (toothless) | 2 comments Definitely a new favorite for me. Found the characters interesting & the world intriguing. Perry & Aria’s lives are intertwined by accident and they meet again once their worlds are in upheaval. I love them! Roar is a perfect element to the story too. Loved 0.5 & book #2 as well.

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Did you like the sequel more, less, or equally?

Shana's Reading Shelf (turningpagesbookclub) Wow, what an amazing story. This books grips you from beginning to end, a total page turner! The world this author creates is original and sucks you right in. I fell in love with Aria and Perry....sigh. You have to read this book!

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Shana wrote: "Wow, what an amazing story. This books grips you from beginning to end, a total page turner! The world this author creates is original and sucks you right in. I fell in love with Aria and Perry......."

Nice! Have you read the novella or sequel yet? I haven't found the time but I hope to soon :)

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

What's this story/book about? I really want to know

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments It's dystopian, so a futuristic world maybe on another planet or a changed earth, can't remember which, with huge Aether storms and various people who are separated. Sort of by accident, a girl from one world (who live very sheltered from the real world) ends up with the other people. There's no insta-love (more like insta-hate) but romance does blossom eventually.

Sorry that's off the top of my head, it's been awhile since I read it!

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

Cool. Thanks for telling me

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments No worries ;) The synopsis will probably do a better job of it but I hope that helped.

T.J. | 109 comments The first and second of this series was great.

i liked this book i thought the plot was cool usually most dystopian reads have the same kind of plot - evil society, have an uprising/revolution - but i never really read a book with this kind of plot it wasnt amazing but it wasnt horrible either

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Yeah, agreed, I liked the plot and the world building the most, but wasn't that into the characters. Overall a good read though!

Trina (trinabetweenchapters) I thought this book started out slow but by the middle I was gripped! I liked that the story mostly took place outside of the societies which meant there didn't need to be a lot of excess world building which can sometimes distract from the actual plot. I really liked both characters by the end, although I did feel a disconnect from them that others are mentioning, but I attributed that to it being written in third person. I would not have wanted to be in Aria's head through her experience though, I think that would have distracted too much from the story since everything was so new to her. I've already requested the novella and the sequel, can't wait to read them too!

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Aww nice Trina! Let us know how you like the novella and the sequel, they're both on my TBR!

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Imogene wrote: "I really didn't like this book, and I feel like I'm the only one who feels this way. I just thought it was really disappointing and boring."

That's okay :) Overall it definitely got some mixed reviews and the characters fell a little flat for me. But I personally liked the plot and the world :)

Jo (jostrader) Imogene,
I agree with you. I was very disappointed with the book. But it is getting rave reviews so I though maybe I missed something. Glad to hear there is someone who agrees with me.

Michelle (misah) | 17 comments Olfactory sense as contraceptive :-) Great Fun! I Liked it but I only gave 3 Stars. It was okay, but it didn't captivate me. I think I won't read Part 2 or 3.

Kelli Really liked this one! Aria really annoyed me at first, but I've really come to like her. And Perry and Roar are amazing <3. I thought the sequel was even better too!

I'm on the fence but I think I'll read them eventually :)

David Estes (davidestesbooks) | 350 comments Kelli wrote: "Really liked this one! Aria really annoyed me at first, but I've really come to like her. And Perry and Roar are amazing <3. I thought the sequel was even better too!"

Hmm yeah, I guess I liked her better by the end, but she wasn't one of my favorite characters. I liked Roar the best ;)

Angie (angiebayne) While Under the Never Sky doesn't really break any new ground in the dystopian/post-apocalyptic/sci-fi genre it is an entertaining read. Aria and Perry are both very interesting characters set in their ways and forced to realize that things are exactly how they thought they were. I enjoyed their journey, both the physical and the mental one. I'm glad that Rossi didn't go for the immediate romance angle. Aria is understandably frightened of Perry and her situation at the beginning, but they grudgingly learn to trust each other and their romance progresses naturally. I was also intrigued by the outsiders enhanced senses. They seem like some kind of natural genetic mutation caused by the Aether storms. I like the fact that these mutants have status and power in the outsider societies. I guess my complaints about the book are the lack of explanation for how the world came to be like it is, what exactly the Aether is and what caused it, how the world became divided and how the pod-people live most of their lives in the Realms but still move around their physical environment. These things might be explained in future books in the series. Even though I had a lot of questions it didn't take away my enjoyment of this story. It was entertaining and intriguing
