Cheryl, did you find it hard to get into? It's so different to the books I've been reading of late. I'm struggling with the change of tempo!
Yes, it is very hard to get into.Stick with it!
Once you get used to the prose, it gets a lot better.
This is one of the few books I've read that I gave 5 stars.
I can't wait to read it! I have a couple of other books lined up ahead of it so I will join you in a week or so.

Thanks Cheryl, I'll try to persist :)

You can do it, Michelle!:)
I started reading this many years ago as a young man (then in my early twentys). I didn't get the humor and didn't finish the book. I thought at the time, "this is just stupid". Funny what experiance can do for you; I'm 48 now and I'm sitting here laughing out loud at parts!
Five chapters in and I'm...meh. It's well written, and interesting, but slightly disjointed.
I find myself having trouble decifering fact from fiction.
I do really enjoy the fact that Yossarian realizes everyone is trying to kill him. Very astute.
Actually, last night I had a breakthrough. I went back to the beginning and started over. This time it's clicking.
I read at breaks at work and at home before I go to sleep. Usually I can get a chapter read at each reading but this book has been so hard to get into I am barely on chapter 4. I find myself distracted by anything else.
I'm thrilled to announce that I am now fully immersed in Heller's world... I'm reading the dialogue in a different voice and I'm laughing at a whole lot of this book.
Major Major Major Major makes me laugh a whole lot. Like, full on, belly laughs.
I'm thrilled that I'm reading this.
It is taking me a little longer to read because at times, I find myself re-reading some passages that are just chalk full of information...
I'm trying to crack on with this but just keep getting side tracked. It's hard going and with so many good books out there to read I would usually have put it down by now. Up to chapter 4 and from reading the comments above, the advice is to stick with it......so I will.
I now have a copy sitting here and plan to start it after I finish one of my current reads. Hopefully before the weekend.

Days later, and I'm still thinking about the book. There are so many intricacies to take in. I'm definitely going to read this a 2nd, even 3rd time.
I won't spoil it at all, but for those who get nearer the end, you'll get a huge, riotous laugh at what happens to Doc Daneeka.
I was sitting, reading to myself on Saturday when I got to said chapter. My roommate was doing his own thing. He might have been playing Mario Cart...anyways...I just began laughing increasingly louder and heartier as the chapter progressed. By the end, I was laughing so hard, my roomie insisted I tell him what was so funny.
But how can you tell a story that begins at the beginning of the book and requires so many details in order to get the story right.
For those reading, KEEP GOING!
*Beware of Spoilers*I've just started this book and am trying to catch up so I can read 'The Dark Half' with you guys next month! I've finished the first 5 chapters so far and I think is is going to be an incredible read! It's interesting to think about the fact that the people actually doing the work in the war seem to have no care, nor give any thought even, to the ethics and morals regarding the war they are participating in. I especially enjoy all of the little catches that Heller throws in the novel, in addition to the major, obvious, Catch 22. I look forward to reading more and also look forward to your thoughts on the novel as well!
I read Catch-22 in my teens, close to 50 years ago now, & to this day it is still the funniest book I have read. A very good TV adaptation was made a few years ago as well & the original film version is also worth watching.
