The Reader by Bernhard Schlink

I hated The Reader

Why is that so, Emily? It's a fairly good book... I liked the novelty of its theme... and that's saying something considering how many books was written about the WW2 or the Holocaust...

I think the character development was weak...I ended up not caring about anyone and what happened to them in the end. The funniest thing about the book was it took 20 pages for me to realize the narrator was a male, that's never a good sign...

Emily ... LOL! yeah, that could be a really bad sign or a good one if the theme is a more universal one and affects everyone, but I loved the way you put it.

Maybe it's just the narrative way the story was told because it's set in a detached tone... and I do agree with you that the character development was weak... because Michael Berg never matured, in way... if you'd finished the book Hanna still calls Michael "jungchen", the German term for kid.
ooppsss..... don't want to tell so much more... this book hasn't been voted for a group read yet, and here am I ranting... sorry... but I do like this book for our group read..

I would go for this one as its not a book I would normally choose, it might be interesting to read if as part of a book club.

Also recently on The Book Show, Seamus Heany choose Jeeves as the literary figure he would most liken himself to, so I'd be interested to find our more about him...

But hey I'm just a new kid on this group, probably don't have a say yet, I'll go with anything really...

It's hard to choose between Neverwhere and The Code of Woosters. (Both such different books).

Its so rare that I get to read something funny so I think I would lean towards the Code of Woosters.

The voting is a mess... just like I said earlier... 3 books are tie... better make another poll on that...

closes tonight we are down to two tied. At this point I'll see where we are in the morning!
