Stephen Just finished the chapter Crops and was struck by the phrase that was used for the oranges that Asia, the black servant hung in Poor Billy's garden patch.

I recalled the haunting Billie Holiday song "Strange Fruit" about lynchings in the south and wondered if this term was much in use at the time that Little Men was written.

It seems like the kind of "lesson" that Louisa May Alcott might try to squeeze into one of her books.
