Since there isn't a discussion on this, I thought I'd start one!

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Does anyone have a recommendation on what book I should read for my novel study? George Orwell, H.G. Wells, Charles Dickens, the Bronte sisters... trying to decide which book.
Has anyone read Jane Eyre?

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I was looking at Wuthering Heights, then my English teacher said it was Stephenie Meyer's inspiration for Twilight. I was like.. hmmmmmmmmm maybe I won't read it after all. lol.

JANE AUSTEN TO DEATH

message 5: by Sam (new)

Sam (Readlovelaughlive) | 4404 comments I heard that Jane Eyre is an excellent novel - but that it has some mature scenes. That's what Brooke said, at least.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Rebekah of Sunnybrook Farm?

Anne of Green Gables is DEFINITELY a fave. Probably #1 fave. The other books of the series were kind of disappointing though - at least, the last couple books.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Sam, you really need to finish Little Women. XP It is a GREAT BOOK! If you can't... at least watch the movie!

And I love Anne of GG! :D

I have so many things to do. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with myself... It's like my body is doing a million things at a million miles per hour - and my brain is somewhere a couple hundred miles behind...

Rachel Cari wrote: "I was looking at Wuthering Heights, then my English teacher said it was Stephenie Meyer's inspiration for Twilight. I was like.. hmmmmmmmmm maybe I won't read it after all. lol."

Wuthering Heights is a good classic, but it is a gothic novel of its time period, which means there are references to ghosts. It is absolutely nothing like Twilight just so you know. No vampires or werewolves. Just some slightly twisted humans. But I didn't read it until I was in college, and I don't think I would've appreciated it any earlier.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay, good to know. :) Thnx.

I really should read Ben-Hur.

Elizabeth (elizabethnovak) | 1575 comments Mod
Totally, have you seen the movie? It is ten times better. There is a lot more christian stuff in it actually.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I've seen the movie, listened to the audio... read about Anne of Green Gables reading it, you name it. :P Except read the actual book. Haha.

Elizabeth (elizabethnovak) | 1575 comments Mod
Haha, okay. You really need to do it then.

message 27: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I'm working on The English Patient right now. It's an interesting writing style. So far, I think I might like the movie better. Hmm...

Ahhh I love The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe!!! I know it repeats a lot which bugs a lot of people but for some reason I love it!!!

message 34: by [deleted user] (new)

I bought an Edgar Allan Poe book. Well, for free on amazon. XP Kind of a long title and I can't recall it this instant.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I am in the process of reading Jane Eyre, too, at the moment. LOVING IT!

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

Has anyone read Gone with the Wind? I read it over Christmas break. LOVED it. I would recommend it - just be aware it is over 800 pages. :)

message 37: by T.J. (new)

T.J. | 233 comments I wanted to read Gone with the Wind. I have it.

Has anyone read a Tale of Two Cities? I love that book.

I couldn't read Jane Eyre. Everything was taking forever.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Gone with the Wind was really good! The ending caught me off guard there tho:( I was sitting there thinking "what the heck just happened?!" Haha

yeah! I heard about a second book to GWtW that someone else wrote. I'm hesitant to read it, as it's not from the same author...

im about to read jane eyre. i think u have to have pretty good english skills to read classics or u get bogged down by the details and language

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree! Especially slave talk. Ugh.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

that's true, Caro. I enjoyed the rich language in Jane Eyre, myself.

yup, that's true. it also takes some getting used to. it's a different sentence structure and word usage.

message 48: by Rose (new)

Rose (seekeroftruth) | 2966 comments Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare I really love this story! The lesson it involves is a good one and the romance (though flawed) is wonderful. Great romance for that time period!

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmm I'm not a fan of Romeo and Juliet. I preferred A Midsummer Night's Dream and Julius Caesar. :)

Mmhmm. I just finished Jane Eyre. It took me 12 DAYS to read it! Not that it was hard for me to read, but it is different, and takes a good deal more thinking than a lot of modern books. :)

Loved the book, by the way. I would recommend it to those who enjoy Jane Austen. It is from the same era, although later, than JA but has a darker mood, and we get to see more of the romance and the feelings of the characters.
