Kat (bookfan101) | 37 comments a recent reform idea to imporve americans test scores is having a year round schooling prograhm.

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

it may ot be bad becaus ei have heard that they do really cool things in the summer...i wouldn't wanna go but who knows...it may be cool...

message 3: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) With Year Round Schooling, do you get breaks at the end of the month? Cause I wouldn't do it if I never got a break.

message 4: by Chandani (new)

Chandani (milkduds920) | 6408 comments me neither. Well, right now im homeschooled and i dont get breaks....

message 5: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) :D but when you're home schooled it's to your own level. So you can get stuff done and have lots of breaks.

message 6: by Liz (new)

Liz With YRS you typically get the same number of weeks off as you would in regular schooling. Of course it depends on the program greatly, but you get plenty of breaks, they just aren't in big chunks of time.

message 7: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) Yup.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

yeah

Not really. I do an online school called Apex online, and its 9-11th grade work. The only break i've gotten for the past three months are the weekends. I have to wake up at 8 to make sure that i wont be doing work until midnight, its pretty pressuring. Plus the classes at NYU, im usually spent by friday and spend saturday and sunday trying to get the crapload of work that they give me for monday done, and repeat. Lol

message 10: by Liz (new)

Liz Then how do you spend four hours babysitting and stealing bread and going on dates and eating ice cream with Mos Def?

Apex online sounds cool.

message 11: by Chandani (last edited Mar 19, 2009 03:02PM) (new)

Chandani (milkduds920) | 6408 comments Wow, are you questioning me? jesus, i'm human i still have a life--however antisocial it may be. Ha, i haven't stolen bread in a while, got a nice t-shirt at urban outfitters though. My date flaked on me, and my father is in japan right now, so we haven't talked for a while, thank you for asking. I can hear him quite clearly through the phone when my parents are screaming at each other though, since you were wondering.

message 12: by Liz (last edited Mar 19, 2009 03:08PM) (new)

Liz What? That was confusing :P
You don't sound antisocial. Urban Outfitters is a cool store. I'm sorry to hear about your date.

Were you being standoffish or nice? I can't tell whether you are mad or being conversational...? Because I did not mean to be mean by any stretch.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

well i have heard some things that were good and bad about year round schooling.

message 14: by Liz (new)

Liz Year Round Schooling:
PROS:
-no long summer break where kids just forget part of the material they learned the previous year
-more breaks in other parts of the year (therefore making travel easier on families because you can go in any season)
-you get more smaller breaks which can be good times to get homework, projects, and big assignments done; a time to regroup which can help deal with the stress of school

CONS:
-don't have as much to look forward to
-the rest of the country gets summer off so you would not be synchronized with your friends, siblings, or many camps
-summer is a good opportunity to go on an extended vacation
-few people want to be in school on hot summer days when they could be at the beach or outside (everyone will be restless)
-everyone needs and deserves a big huge break at some point

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

that is like exactly right...

message 16: by Chandani (new)

Chandani (milkduds920) | 6408 comments The thing about year round schooling is that like liz said, everyone will be restless, they will probably be agitated, and maybe even develop early stress problems.

message 17: by Liz (new)

Liz Yes...But they do get breaks which are good for winding down...I think there should be a mix of YR schools and regular schools that way kids and parents can choose what works best for them.

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments I'm kinda pissed at Obama for wanting school to end at 9.

message 19: by Liz (new)

Liz That is never going to happen.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

that will never happen...i hope not

message 21: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments I know, the congress would never accept that as a law. But I can still be pissed Obama.

message 24: by Liz (new)

Emma the Dork (cheesehead) i think year round schooling is interesting.

message 29: by Emma the Dork (new)

Emma the Dork (cheesehead) but i am not sure

message 30: by Kat (new)

Kat (bookfan101) | 37 comments There are alot of pros
no long summer to forget things which will need to b reviewed.
our calendar now is based on times when kids would be needed at home to work on the farm
our country in only in 11th place when it comes to schools
our test scoures would increase by 13.2% according to studies

But there are cons 2
summer is the only time our youth can go to far away campes for long amounts of time and makes friends with people of other cultural, and religious backgrounds. Without a summer our youth could not go to these camps and would not be able to bound and understand people differnt from them which would lead to a very preg country.

Could you please find out exactly what news channel, as I'm pretty sure (Like 98.9999% sure) Obama didn't say anything about school ending at 9..

message 32: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments Summer camp. Smart people don't need year round schooling. We remember or study during the summer.

our country comes in 11th place when it comes to schooling. Though it may be painful now it will be the best for us in the long run to compete for jobs in the 21 centry. Its kinda like tough love. I personally would hate to waist more time in school but i would agree that this is what our country needs. Dont be pissed, its wut will help u get a job and have a good future.

message 35: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments I'm doing well without schooling late. Heck, I could probably home school myself and be just as smart.

message 36: by Chandani (new)

Chandani (milkduds920) | 6408 comments year round schooling sounds pretty bad, but i kind of agree with Kat. Im like ADDICTED to acedemics so i think it would be fine. Compared to Japan europe and other countries America really is STUPID. Year round schooling doesn't soudn all that bad. It might b more like university life even.

:D
