In your independent reading book, identify a important quote, and explain why it was significant to the text.

How do I know a quote is important?:
-Reveals an important thought, feeling, or opinion
-Reveals a change in view or a realization
-Makes the reader think about the character or text in a different way
-Reveals a specific author's craft literary technique

Please consult your rubric and models to ensure that you are doing your best work!

For a “4”: Did I….
• Write a topic sentence that provided the claim and important text information, such as the title, author, and genre of my text?
• Provide background of what is happening in the text so my reader understands what I’m talking about? Did I say what was happening at the time of the quote/evidence?
• Find evidence from the text that proves that the change was important?
• Paraphrase (This shows....) and then analyze how my quote proves my claim ("This proves that ____________________was an important moment because.../This interested me because..../I disliked this because..../This changed my point of view because.....)?
• Write a conclusion sentence that restates your claim in a different way?

The quote that is important to me was when she didn't get accepted to a school. For example in the text it said "We regret to inform you...thousands of qualified candidates...not a reflection on your abilities... many opportunities elsewhere... sincerely..." The need to vomit vanishes. Dead girls don't puke." (69). This shows that it is a point in the story where she will start to change her mood and how she reacts to problems now. This proves that this was an important moment in the story because it will make you thinks about the character in a different way once they don't act like there usual self. Overall, this was a important quote from the story that the author wanted to show the readers how the character will react to bigger obstacles and if the character will change who they are.

Sammy | 26 comments In Cornelia's Funke's realistic fiction novel, The Thief Lord, an important quote was when Prosper and Bo, two brothers have been caught stealing valuable items from an antique shop. They were spotted by their aunt and uncle. They both send out a detective named Victor Getz to see what they are doing. Once the boys see him, they decide to run away to Venice, Italy and find a place to live. They decide to disguise themselves as well. Therefore, the text states, "Let's run away to Venice, and hide out in an old movie theater. We can dye our hair blonde so no one will ever find us." (84). This shows that Prosper and Bo are trying to find a way to escape the detective without being caught. This proves that this is an important quote because it changes the lives of both characters and the way they live. Overall, this quote affects Prosper and Bo in a negative way.

Brooke Christina | 30 comments In the book , Insurgent by Veronica Roth , Tris is feeling overwhelmed because every non divergent is trying to kill her. Everyone found out that Tris and her boyfriend Tobias are divergent and Jeanine wants to kill all divergent a to be found and killed . She puts a chip in everyone's neck and she'd know who's divergent if they don't respond to the chip . Tris and Tobias try their hardest not to . That was when the guys working for Jeanine found out that they were Divergent . Now they run away to another group where the people are caring and sweet and also where they hope they won't be found . For example , Tris states, “Killing you is not the worst thing they can do to you," I say. "Controlling you is.” This shows that Tris isn't focused on being killed at that moment , she is focused on not being controlled because controlled could lead to being killed . This proves that she is trying to prevent getting killed . Therefore, this quote shows that they don't want to get killed and especially be controlled .
