Eric's suggestion is top notch. Emperor of All Maladies is an excellent choice.
I'm not certain if you are looking for fiction or non-fiction but I would suggest

It's about the London cholera epidemic. Quite fascinating, but don't read during a meal. You need a strong stomach.

I loved it too. I really cried, and hadn't done that with a book in a long time...well except for when I read The Fault in our Stars. I bought copies for friends and family and had them read it as well. The movie version was good. This is a hard topic, but one we need to know more about!
