Kristen | 1179 comments Talk about anything, everything or nothing in this thread. Tell how your day went, rant about something or tell us how much you love chocolate. It doesn't matter. If you have something on your mind, say it here.

Arg. My hands hurt. I typed out this long rant about something to post here, but deleted it because I didn't want to start an argument. I've read far too many arguments about that particular topic today, thank you very much(and no, I will not tell you what the argument is ;) ). I can't believe that after taking 3 different typing classes in my lifetime, my hands still hurt if I type too much!

My hands get so cramped after studying and exams. SO MUCH WRITING. As with you, I'm surprised I'm not used to it by now...

Speaking of which: studying sucks, but at least I don't have to leave the apt when they're predicting 2+ ft of snow/freezing rain in the next 24 hrs. Just hope the power holds out...

Kristen | 1179 comments Studying totally sucks. I consider myself very lucky that I am able to do well enough in school without having to study much. Doing the homework and paying attention in class is usually enough for me.

Had a horrendous headache earlier. Killer migraine. A new head just seemed to be the way to go!

message 9: by Kristen (new)

Kristen | 1179 comments It does seem that way, doesn't it? Headaches are so bothersome...

Madeleine Holly-Rosing (mhollyrosing) | 152 comments Hi Everyone:

I've got the second chapter of BOSTON METAPHYSICAL up as a separate book now. If you'd like to rate and/or review it I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Dawn | 257 comments Legend of Bill (http://legendofbill.com/) is romping through other webcomics for a while. Monday was Schlock Mercenary, today is Order of the Stick.

Knowing the love here for OotS, had to share!

I've never read Legend of Bill, but that's a really cool idea. I like to think that all webcomic creators are super best friends with each other.

I thought I heard someone calling my name. ;)

Haven't read Legend of Bill yet, but this still amuses me greatly. And like Kristen I really like crossover stuff between webcomics.

Thanks for sharing!

Entirely probable...

K.J. Joyner (spearcarrier) I must be allergic! LOL.

Today I'm plotting a new book, a table top art book with some words. And that's what is on my mind, to my clients' frustration.

I wonder how badly it would affect me if I read Legend of Bill.

I am greatly amused to hear the producers of one of my favorite tv shows (Leverage) randomly talking about they're big fans of XKCD, Penny Arcade and Order of the Stick during the dvd commentary.

Kristen | 1179 comments I feel really bad for not noticing until now that there was a new comment here. I'm going to respond to it anyways.

It's really interesting the things that you learn while watching commentary. About the people who made them, what they were thinking when they made everything and how they did it. Whenever I buy DVDs, I always make sure to get the one that has the best commentaries on it. I love all of that background stuff. I bought the blu-ray of Princess and the Frog, despite not owning a blu-ray player just for the commentary. I had to watch it at someone else's house.

No problem. It's easy to overlook a thread sometimes.

I love commentaries and behind-the-scenes stuff too. I don't watch them for everything (lack of time), but when I do they're always interesting and informative. The Leverage commentaries have been some of my favorites - the producers, writers and directors are all involved (and in later seasons some actors too), and they share great details and stories about making the show.

Joss Whedon's commentaries are fantastic. He's extremely informative while remaining amusing. The Avengers one was particularly great.

Haven't listened to the commentary yet but the behind-the-scenes features for Thor: The Dark World were fascinating.

Kristen | 1179 comments I think my favorite commentaries are the ones for Invader Zim. Nearly all of the episodes across the entire show have commentary and you get some combination of the show creator, the voice actors, and other people who worked on the show. They have this great rapport with each other and they do silly stuff all the time, like talking with their mouth full of crackers or humming along to the theme song. And of course, it's informative as well. Where they got their inspiration from, which parts they love, and which parts they hate. It's fun to watch and one of the few commentaries that I've gotten around to watching more than once. I realize now that they've kind of spoiled me. A lot of cartoons will only have commentary on one or two episodes per season, rather than every episode.

Dawn | 257 comments I remember one series, the commentary for one episode talked about how to fake sushi, which was rather interesting, because apparently they got it so right, even up close on set it was hard to tell it really was fruit.

At the same time, I was working near where they filmed parts of Public Enemy. (no, I didn't see Johnny Depp!) The street was blocked off to cars and they set it up--fake storefronts, redid the front of the theater, even streetcar tracks down the middle of the street! And they let us wander around when they weren't filming; I even got to take some pictures. Amazing, the work that goes on behind the scenes. Oscars are probably well-deserved, I'm guessing.

Seen (and enjoyed) Zim, but never watched the commentaries. Will have to check them out.

I love hearing about stuff like that. Food comes up a lot in discussions, mostly about how some actors don't want their character to eat because that means you have to do it every take, but directors and writers love having characters sit down to meals because it makes them more relatable and likable to the audience.

Another interesting tidbit from Leverage was the producer taking about how Chinese food is ideal to have when showing characters eating because you don't have to worry about continuity of the food from take to take because it's in containers and can't be seen.

That's so awesome that they let you walk around the dressed areas when they weren't filming. Must've been really interesting to see the changes.

Kristen | 1179 comments I watched a behind the scenes for The Cabin in the Woods that had to do with food kinda. There's a scene where a girl is making out with a deer head mounted to the wall(I realize that it sounds stupid. It's supposed to be). It's supposed to look dusty and old, so they used powdered sugar to coat the deer's tongue so that it would taste good. I think it's nice that they take into consideration that the actors have to have this stuff in their mouth which they act out the scene. There's a scene in the second Harry Potter movie is barfing up slugs and the actor said that they were actually made of candy or something like that. I just think that was awfully nice of the set designers.

Dawn | 257 comments They couldn't use fish because hot lights, multiple takes, actors barfing all over set... you know.

And as for the street stuff--the stores and restaurants were still open during the day, minimizing loss of income. False storefronts were mostly used, there was a newsstand with papers with the appropriate headers (although the dates were inaccurate, but who's going to see that on screen?), reprints of old movie posters were hung up. And you could also see the actors' marks: neon bits of tape with stage directions along the lines of "stop; see [character name] in alley." Just very very cool, and I still mean to watch at least that scene in the movie to see how it looks on screen!

I totally forgot to remark on that in my last post. It's cool that you got to see a film set. They did some filming in my town for the Tomorrowland movie and it was the biggest deal ever. I personally did not get the chance to go by and see the set, but it was the only thing people would talk about for the week that they were around. Apparently the areas that were being filmed were super busy. I did get to see some pictures of what they did to the builings for the set and they look completely different. I was a bit surprised. There was a news story about how George Clooney got a pedicure at some salon in town. There was a picture of him and the lady who was doing the pedicure and she looked like it was Christmas, her birthday, her wedding day and the birth of her first child all rolled into one. I'm really looking forward to the movie just so I can watch the scenes that feature my town. I want to be able to brag about having been there :)
