1. Andy is a star high school basketball player. One day after one of his games, Andy and his best friends, BJ, Robbie, and Tyrone decided to drink to celebrate a win. Andy made the mistake of getting in the car after he drank and thought he was okay to drive. He was wrong. Andy crashed the car, which ended up killing his best friend Robbie. Andy gets harassed by the whole school and everybody makes him feel hated and like he doesn’t deserve to live. Everybody is upset with him, including his own parents. His grades go downhill, also. He doesn’t talk to anybody anymore, and ultimately ends up taking his own life in the end.
2. I gave this book 3 stars. I thought that it was a really interesting book and had a lot of vivid detail and imagery, but overall it was a really depressing book. Although it did send out a good message about drinking and driving, I don’t think I would read another book like this. It was too depressing for me and made me sad.
3. "It seems like being' dead is the only way I'll ever feel alive again." This quote was stated by Andy, the main character in the end of the book. This is when the hazing and hateful messages were being sent to him from all his class mates. He was seeing a psychologist, but she felt like he was doing better than he actually was. He was showing improvement for awhile, but his depression and sadness was a lot deeper than the psychologist thought. He felt like life would never get better for him and that ending his own life would be better than going through this rough patch in his life.
4. There were a lot of ways to analyze this book. The deep depression that Andy had could be analyzed in so many different ways. Knowing what to look for when searching for symbols and meanings makes it easier to understand what I’m reading in a different way.
5. I would recommend this book to people who like really serious books because it had a lot of really nail biting moments that made you want to keep reading to find out what happened. I’m usually not one to read a real serious book, but this one was pretty decent. I was recommended to read this book by my older brother because he read it in high school and thought that it was really good. It’s important to realize the lessons in this book about drinking and driving because it is a really serious issue now a days that happens more often. The consequences are harsh and life changing.
