The most of the people shot were based on a list that they both wrote. Valarie had no idea that Nick would start shooting people one day. The story describes the obstacles that Valerie has to overcome from being shot by her boyfriend in order to stop the shooting to her return to school.
2. I give this book a 4.5 rating. It was well written and I was able to picture what Valarie was going through. The author easily takes you on a journey with the words and emotions she conveys.
3. “We all got to be winners sometimes. But what he didn’t understand was that we all had to be losers, too. Because you can’t have one without the other”. What this quote refers to is what Nick would always tell Valarie when they were having a rough day with bullies. You can’t have both sides be ‘winners’. The day when Nick was shooting the school he was a winner under his eyes but then he killed himself returning to being a ‘loser’. The whole loser and winner thing is a theme throughout the book.
4. While reading this book I found myself analyzing everything about the characters and what was going around their lives. I use psychoanalytic approach most of the time, trying to put myself in their situation and use the id, ego, and superego we learned in class.
5. I recommend this book to teenagers because a shooting could happen in a school as we have gotten many threats in our four years at South Elgin High School. Also if you have lost someone that is very close to you such as a boyfriend/girlfriend. Other people that might be able to relate to this book are people whose families are falling apart as this book deals with divorce and cheating.
