Growing up in a small town where everyone knew everyone else and there were lots of churches, this story felt very real to me. It could happen in any small town, the local heads of churches competing for church members. Actually, I'm sure it does happen.

The end of the story was perfect. People will go a long way to protect the status quo.

Brian (brianconner) | 9 comments Another good, thought provoking story.

My initial thought was that it was God who snuffed out Helen in order to keep his secrets...and that the point of the story was that sometimes it's better not to get that peak behind the curtain...

But after reading your comment and re-reading the ending, I see that Lesley was right. Three pious men. Men who claim to serve the Lord committed the most atrocious of sins against their fellow (wo)man in order to protect their own interests. It's amazing what fear, uncertainty and doubt can drive a person to do.

The end was incredible and shocking to me, but after some thought realized that it really worked and without it the story wouldn't have been what it was- a story about those we trust to tell the truth, covering up the truth in the worst way possible. Ooh, it gives me goosebumps!
