Jen (ashestoashes24) | 1 comments Suggestions?

I just watched the movie of 12 Years a Slave so I would like something else, just because I am familiar with that story now.

Barbara Schanne Atkins I am currently reading "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl". It was a kindle sale offering recently. To say I am enjoying it sounds awful, it is an interesting read.

Louise | 279 comments Alabama Slave Narratives - interesting reading, can be read just in excerpts.

Rachel (rkann) | 3 comments The Wedding Gift by Marlen Suyapa Bodden - set in Alabama, the story is told by both Sarah (a young slave) and the plantation owner's wife. Very interesting work of historical fiction.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) I really liked Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Also Kindred by Octavia E. Butler is a classic.

Thanks for this suggestion! I did some digging and found a set of narratives from Tennessee. Now to decide if I'll use that for "slave narrative" or "nonfiction about your hometown or state"...

Lydia (lydiasheffield) | 2 comments My book club is reading Malinche by Laura Esquival and it fits into the slave narrative category. It's not a very long book, and has been interesting so far.

I'm reading Malinche by Laura Esquival for my slave narrative selection-set in Mexico during the time of Cortez and Montezuma

Kate Gardner (nose_in_a_book) | 8 comments The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd is a beautiful, absorbing book that follows the lives of a slave and her owner. One of my favourite books of recent years.

Julie M (woolyjooly) | 315 comments Totally agree with you! I just finished this for our local book club. Excellent storytelling by Sue Monk Kidd, with a good dose of history embedded. It was hard to read some chapters because of the cruelty and racism, but wow. Don't miss this one.
