I am currently reading "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl". It was a kindle sale offering recently. To say I am enjoying it sounds awful, it is an interesting read.
The Wedding Gift by Marlen Suyapa Bodden - set in Alabama, the story is told by both Sarah (a young slave) and the plantation owner's wife. Very interesting work of historical fiction.

My book club is reading Malinche by Laura Esquival and it fits into the slave narrative category. It's not a very long book, and has been interesting so far.

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd is a beautiful, absorbing book that follows the lives of a slave and her owner. One of my favourite books of recent years.
Totally agree with you! I just finished this for our local book club. Excellent storytelling by Sue Monk Kidd, with a good dose of history embedded. It was hard to read some chapters because of the cruelty and racism, but wow.
